Overall, the Spartans won three Southern Conference championships, appeared in three postseason tournaments and posted the highest GPA across the board in the athletic department in program history during the 2016-17 campaign.

UNCGspartans.com has identified the top 10 moments from 2016-17 and will be counting down the memories over the next two weeks. Moments No. 10-6 will be released July 10-14 while moments No. 5-1 will be released July 17-21.

The No. 6 moment happened during the month of March as the UNCG women's basketball team made its first postseason appearance since 2002 and advanced to the WBI Championship Game. The Spartans notched wins over Charleston Southern, Brown and Milwaukee on its way to the title game.

Women's Basketball Advances To WBI Championship Game, Wins Three Games In Tournament

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Making its first postseason appearance since 2002, the UNCG women's basketball team made a deep run late into March. The Spartans grabbed three wins on the way to a trip to Houston, Texas for the WBI Championship Game against Rice.

The Spartans opened the tournament on the road, defeating Charleston Southern 45-37 in South Carolina thanks to a hellacious defensive effort. The Blue and Gold then returned home to Fleming Gymnasium to register a come-from-behind 87-84 victory over Brown behind 15-fourth quarter points from Bailey Williams (Harrisonburg, Va./Spotswood). UNCG advanced to the title game a few short days later with a 59-49 win against Milwaukee.

Although the Spartans' championship run came up just short with UNCG falling 74-62 to the Owls of Rice, the postseason drive brought renewed optimism for a program that returns a talented young core primed for future success.

The WBI run was just one of many highlights for the Spartans on the year. UNCG finished the season with a 20-15 record to garner the first 20-win campaign for the program since 2006-07. The Blue and Gold posted a 7-7 Southern Conference mark to earn the fourth seed in the SoCon Tournament, advancing to the semifinals for the first time since 2006.

UNCG landed three All-SoCon selections in 2016-17, including SoCon Freshman of the Year Nadine Soliman (Cairo, Egypt/Mokattam Language School). Additionally, head coach Trina Patterson was named the conference coach of the year in her first season in Greensboro after leading one of the biggest turnarounds in the nation.
