GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG women's basketball held its annual award's banquet Wednesday afternoon at Starmount Forest Country Club in Greensboro, recapping an exciting 2016-17 campaign and handing out numerous team awards.
The event capped what was a huge turnaround season for the Spartans, who went 20-15 to garner the first 20-win campaign for the program since 2006-07. UNCG posted a 7-7 Southern Conference record to earn the fourth seed in the SoCon Tournament, advancing to the semifinals for the first time since 2006. The Blue and Gold then went on a deep postseason run, advancing to the Women's Basketball Invitational Championship Game in Houston, Texas.
As part of the festivities, the UNCG coaching staff presented the team awards for the season. Raking in the Offensive Player of the Year Award was Nadine Soliman (Cairo, Egypt/Mokattam Language School) after leading the Spartans in scoring during her freshman campaign. Co-winners were announced for the Defensive Player of the Year Award, with Mariah Wilson (Atlanta, Ga./North Atlanta) and Alexis Pitchford (Orlando, Fla./Winter Park) receiving the distinction.
After taking the reigns of the offense in her senior season, Bailey Williams (Harrisonburg, Va./Spotswood) was named the Most Improved Player of the Year Award, while senior India Timpton (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) was bestowed with the Lynne Agee Coaches Award.
