Men's Basketball Takes Winning Streak To Wake Forest Friday Night
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s basketball team is riding a four-game winning streak and the Spartans will be put to the test Friday night as they battle Atlantic Coast Conference foe Wake Forest. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the LJVM Coliseum in Winston-Salem and will be broadcast on the ACC Network Plus, ESPN3 and the ESPN App with Ty Collins and James Overstreet on the call. Additionally, the game will be broadcast on TuneIn and www.uncgspartans.com with Scott Pryzwansky and Darryl Kosciak on the call.
The Spartans enter Friday’s game with a 4-1 overall record and have won four-straight games with wins over North Carolina Wesleyan, Ferrum College, Delaware and Longwood. UNCG is averaging 75.0 points per game while holding opponents to just 51.4 points per game. The Spartans are shooting 45.5 percent (133-of-292) from the field and 35.2 percent (50-of-142) from 3-point land. UNCG is holding its opponents to just 36.7 percent shooting from the field (87-of-237) and 28.4 percent (25-of-88) from distance. UNCG is out-rebounding opponents by a 39.6-26.8 margin.
The Spartans have been a tough team to score against this season, holding opponents to just 51.4 points per game. UNCG ranks first in the Southern Conference and third in NCAA Division I through five games. The Spartans have not allowed more than 66 points in a game this season and are holding opponents to just 36.7 percent shooting from the field. UNCG is coming of a 71-40 victory over Longwood, marking the lowest scoring output by an NCAA Division I opponent for the Spartans since Samford score 40 points in 2009.
Junior guard Francis Alonso (Malaga, Spain/Cushing Academy) leads the Spartans in scoring at 14.4 points per game. Alonso is shooting 42.4 percent from 3-point land and has hit a team-high 14 3-pointers (14-33). He also ranks second on the team with 13 assists. Senior forward Marvin Smith (Richmond, Va./Fork Union Military Academy) is second on the team in scoring at 13.2 points per game and ranks third on the team with 5.4 rebounds per game. Smith is tied for the team lead with 14 made 3-pointers, hitting at 35.9 percent. Sophomore James Dickey (Raleigh, N.C./Word of God) leads the team on the glass grabbing 8.6 rebounds per game while scoring 8.4 points per game. Dickey leads the team with 17 blocked shots.
Freshman guard Isaiah Miller (Covington, Ga./Newton) is fourth on the team in scoring at 7.2 points per game off the bench. Sophomore Kyrin Galloway (Milton, Ga./Milton) chips in 7.0 points per game and 4.8 rebounds per game. Senior forward Jordy Kuiper (Groningen, Netherlands/Canaries Basketball Academy) is second on the team with 5.6 rebounds per game.
Wake Forest enters Friday’s game with a 1-4 overall record. The Demon Deacons have dropped games to Georgia Southern, Liberty, Drake and Houston while defeating Quinnipiac. Three of their four losses have come by five points or less. Wake Forest is 0-2 at home this season and is beginning a three-game home stretch Friday. The Demon Deacons are averaging 73.6 points per game while allowing 74.8 points per game. Wake Forest is shooting 42.6 percent (123-of-289) from the field and 37 percent (44-of-119) from 3-point land. Opponents are shooting 43.5 percent (128-of-294) from the field and 41.3 percent (52-of-126) from deep.
Bryant Crawford leads three Wake Forest players averaging double figures scoring at 16.8 points per game. Crawford has hit 9-of-29 (31%) from 3-point land and is second on the team with 19 assists. Keyshawn Woods is second on the team in scoring at 16.3 points per game and second on the team with eight made 3-pointers. Chaundee Brown rounds out the double figure scorers at 10.6 points per game while adding 4.8 rebounds per game. Doral Moore leads Wake Forest with 8.0 rebounds per game.
Friday’s game marks the 11th meeting all-time between UNCG and Wake Forest. The Spartans are 0-10 all-time against the Demon Deacons since moving to the NCAA Division I level in 1991. The Spartans played the Demon Deacons in their first-ever game at the Division I level, dropping an 87-59 contest. In fact, Wake Forest has never loss to a team from the Triad, going 31-0 all-time against UNCG (10-0), Elon (8-0), High Point (5-0), N.C. A&T (4-0) and Winston-Salem State (4-0).
The teams played a tough game last year in the Greensboro Coliseum, with the Spartans suffering a heart-breaking 78-75 contest to Wake Forest. UNCG rallied from a 16-point second half deficit and tied the game at 75-75 with 28.6 seconds remaining on a basket by Diante Baldwin. Wake Forest scored the game-winning basket on a deep 25-foot 3-pointer from Bryant Crawford with 2.0 seconds remaining to win the game for the Demon Deacons. Former Spartan R.J. White led UNCG with 22 points in 27 minutes while Baldwin scored 18 points in the loss. Former Wake Forest standout John Collins scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds while Crawford added 17 points.
