GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s basketball team entered the week ranked fourth in NCAA Division I in scoring defense and the Spartans continued that trend Tuesday night as they stifled visiting Longwood 71-40 at the Greensboro Coliseum in the UNCG Spartan Classic. The victory is the fourth-straight for the Spartans, improving to 4-1 on the year as they head to Winston-Salem Friday night for a meeting with Atlantic Coast Conference member Wake Forest at 7 p.m.
The Spartans limited Longwood to just 12 field goals in the game and only three in the second half as they out-scored the Lancers 38-11 in the final 20 minutes. UNCG held Longwood to just 29.3 percent (12-of-41) shooting from the field and 26.7 percent (4-of-15) from 3-point land on the night. The 40 points is a season-low for a Spartans’ opponent and is the lowest UNCG has held a team since 2009 when the Spartans limited Samford to 40 points. It also marks the third time this year UNCG has held an opponent under 50 points.
Offensively, the Spartans connected on 41.9 percent (26-of-61) from the field and 32.4 percent (11-of-34) from 3-point land. UNCG forced Longwood into 26 turnovers and turned those miscues into 30 points. The Spartans also won the rebounding battle by a 43-27 margin, including 14 offensive rebounds generating a 19-1 advantage in second chance points.
Junior guard Francis Alonso (Malaga, Spain/Cushing Academy) led three in double figures and nine different Spartans scored in the victory. Alonso posted 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field and 3-of-6 from 3-point land. Sophomore forward Kyrin Galloway (Milton, Ga./Milton) came off the bench and added 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field.
Senior forward Marvin Smith (Richmond, Va./Fork Union Military Academy) shook off foul trouble to add 10 points in 20 minutes. Sophomore forward James Dickey (Raleigh, N.C./Word of God) led the way on the glass with a game-high 11 rebounds while blocking five shots. Senior forward Jordy Kuiper (Groningen, Netherlands/Canaries Basketball Academy) added nine points and eight rebounds, hitting 3-of-6 from deep.
Longwood (0-4) actually held a 17-11 lead at the 13:32 mark of the game as B.K. Ashe was hot in the beginning, scoring 17 points in the first half before being held scoreless in the second half. The Spartans responded with an 11-0 run to take a 22-17 lead. Kuiper and Alonso hit back-to-back 3-pointers to ignite the surge while freshman Isaiah Miller (Covington, Ga./Newton) scored two baskets off drives. The Spartans would take a 33-29 lead into the locker room as Malik Massey (Charlotte, N.C./New Hampton Prep) hit a late 3-pointer to give UNCG the four-point lead at the break.
The Spartans put the game out of reach early in the second half opening on a 16-4 run and out-scoring Longwood 33-9 over the first 15 minutes of the half. Alonso scored fie points in the opening run while Galloway scored four points as UNCG extended its lead to 49-33. The Spartans put the game out of reach after Smith connected on back-to-back 3-pointers with 4:53 remaining to give UNCG a 64-38 lead.
