GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s basketball team will hit the floor for the first time in public in a game situation this season Sunday afternoon as the Spartans travel to Chapel Hill to take part in the Charity Exhibition Jamboree with host North Carolina, UNCW and ECU. Each school will play a total of 40 minutes, divided up in three segments against the other teams.
Game time is set for 3 p.m. at the Dean Smith Center to raise money for the governor’s North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund. Tickets are $20 and are general admission seating. Tickets may be purchased at the UNC Athletics Ticket Office at the Williamson Athletics Center next to the Smith Center, at GoHeels.com or by calling 1-800-722-HEEL. No video or audio streaming will be available for the Jamboree to encourage fans to come to the Dean Smith Center to help raise money for charity.
The schedule for the event begins with North Carolina and ECU playing first for 13 minutes followed by UNCG and UNCW meeting for 13 minutes. UNCW and ECU will meet next (13 minutes) before the Spartans play the Tar Heels in the fourth contest (13 minutes). UNCG meets ECU in its final contest of the day (14 minutes) before UNCW and UNC closing out the day with a game (14 minutes).
The Spartans are coming off a record-setting season in 2016-17, posting a program-record 25-10 mark and winning the Southern Conference regular season title. UNCG was picked to finish third in this year’s preseason poll and are led by junior guard Francis Alonso (Malaga, Spain/Cushing Academy). Alonso led the team in scoring last season with 14.9 points per game and hit a program-record 102 3-pointers.
Senior forward Marvin Smith (Richmond, Va./Fork Union Military Academy) is the Spartans’ second-leading scorer returning at 9.1 points per game. Smith connected on 55 3-pointers while grabbing 4.1 rebounds per game. Junior guard Demetrius Troy (Raleigh, N.C./Word of God) returns after averaging 6.9 points per game and hitting 44 3-pointers.
North Carolina enters Sunday’s game ranked No. 9 in the preseason national polls. The Tar Heel posted a 33-7 record last season and are led by Joel Berry. Berry averaged 14.7 points per game and dished out a team-high 138 assists. Theo Pinson returns after scoring 6.1 points per game for UNC.
UNCW is coming off a 29-6 record last season that saw it appear in the NCAA Tournament. The Seahawks were picked to finish fifth in the Colonial Athletic Association in the preseason poll. Devontae Cacok leads UNCW into the season after averaging 12.3 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. Cacok connected on 80 percent (184-of-230) from the field last season.
East Carolina rounds out the Jamboree after posting a 15-18 record last season. The Pirates are picked to finish 11th in the American Athletic Conference. Kentrell Barkley is the leading returning scorer for ECU after averaging 13.2 points and 7.6 rebounds per game.
