KANSAS CITY, Mo. – UNCG men’s basketball received the National Association of Basketball Coaches’ (NABC) Sixth Annual Team Academic Excellence Award. Jordy Kuiper, Marvin Smith and Taqqi Muhammad were also named to the 2017-18 NABC Honors Court.
UNCG was just one of two Southern Conference schools to garner the distinction along with Mercer. The Spartans produced three of the nine SoCon players selected to the NABC Honors Court.
The team award recognize outstanding academic achievement by a team with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better for the 2017-18 season. In order to earn an NABC Team Academic Excellence Award, institutions in the NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA must count the GPAs of all men’s basketball student-athletes who competed during the 2017-18 season.
In order to be named to the Honors Court, a student-athlete must meet a high standard of academic criteria. The qualifications are as follows:
- Academically a junior or senior and a varsity player.
- Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the 2017-18 academic year.
- Students must have matriculated at least one year at their current institution.
- Member of a NCAA Division I, II, III, or NAIA Division I or II institution with a NABC member coach.
UNCG had three student-athletes earn spots on the Academic All-SoCon announced Monday: Kuiper, Smith and Justin Jordan.
