GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG sophomore forward James Dickey (Raleigh, N.C./Word of God) has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday morning. This is the first weekly award of Dickey’s career and he is the third Spartan to be honored, joining teammates Francis Alonso and Marvin Smith.
Dickey led the Spartans to an impressive 3-0 week against teams in the top-five in the SoCon standings with wins at Furman, over Western Carolina and snapping ETSU’s 16-game winning streak last night with a 74-56 win. He averaged 10.0 points, 9.3 rebounds and 3.3 blocks per game on the week while shooting 50 percent (12-of-24) from the field.
Dickey’s most impressive outing came against the first-place Buccaneers when he helped UNCG hold ETSU to a season-low 56 points. He set the UNCG single-game record with eight blocked shots, helping the Spartans set a team record with 14 rejections in the win. His eight blocks are tied for ninth-most in SoCon history and the most since Justin Tuoyo had nine blocks in 2015. He also added eight points and seven rebounds against ETSU.
Dickey opened the week with a double-double against Furman in Greenville. He scored 11 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, helping the Spartans out-rebound the Paladins 38-17 in the win. He added 11 points and nine rebounds in a victory over Western Carolina, helping the Spartans hold the Catamounts to a season-low 48 points. On the season, Dickey is averaging 8.7 points per game while leading the SoCon with 8.4 rebound per game and 55 total blocks.
Dickey and the Spartans begin a three-game road swing Thursday evening in Charleston, S.C., when they battle The Citadel. Game time is set for 6 p.m. and will air on ESPN3 and the ESPN App.
