MALAGA, Spain – The UNCG men’s basketball team is exploring all of the sights and sounds of Spain on its foreign tour this week. The Spartans started the trip arriving in Madrid before traveling down to Southern Spain and the city of Malaga.
The Spartans arrived in Madrid Sunday morning and quickly hit the basketball court as they were invited to practice on the campus of Real Madrid. UNCG became the first outside team to practice on the Real Madrid courts. The Spartans had the chance to explore Madrid the rest of the day before heading to Bernabeu Stadium, the home of Real Madrid Soccer. UNCG got a tour of the stadium and facilities before taking in dinner.
The following day, the Spartans played their first game of the trip, taking on the Spain U-16 team in Madrid. The Spartans posted a 66-49 game against the Spain U-16 team with 12 different players scoring in the victory. UNCG jumped on the high-speed train in Spain and travelled south to the city of Malaga, the hometown of junior guard Francis Alonso (Malaga, Spain/Cushing Academy).
The Spartans played their second game of the trip Tuesday evening in front of a standing-room only crowd in the village of Alhaurin de la Torre against the Malaga Select team. UNCG pulled out its second victory of the trip with a 71-51 contest in the great atmosphere. Alonso led the way with a double-double of 12 points and 10 assists in his return home to Malaga.
UNCG will play two more games on the trip in two different cities in Southern Spain. The Spartans will travel to Granada to play the Granada Select team at Noon Thursday (6 a.m. ET) before travelling to Sevilla and facing Sevilla Select at 7 p.m. Friday (1 p.m. ET).
