Men’s Basketball Places Four On SoCon All-Tournament Team
GREESNBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s basketball team placed a program-record four on the Southern Conference All-Tournament Team after the Spartans advanced to the SoCon Tournament championship game Monday night. The four members are the most al-time for UNCG and the most for any team this season in the tournament.
Senior guard Diante Baldwin (Greensboro, N.C./High Point Christian) and senior center R.J. White (Frisco, Texas/Frisco) were named First Team All-Tournament while sophomore guard Francis Alonso (Malaga, Spain/Cushing Academy) and redshirt freshman forward James Dickey (Raleigh, N.C./Word of God) earned Second Team All-Tournament accolades.
Baldwin averaged 15.3 points per game in the Spartans’ three games against The Citadel, Wofford and ETSU. He scored in double figures all three games, including a game-high 22 points in the semifinal win over Wofford. He added 12 points in the quarterfinals against The Citadel before scoring 12 points in the title game Monday against ETSU before fouling out after 28 minutes.
White averaged 17.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game on the weekend, shooting 62.9 percent (22-of-35) from the field and 63.6 percent (7-of-11) from the free throw line. He opened the tournament with a double-double of 21 points and 12 rebounds against The Citadel, hitting 10-of-16 from the field. He added eight points against Wofford, despite battling four trouble. He capped the tournament with a 23-point performance against ETSU, hitting 8-of-13 from the field and 6-of-8 from the free throw line.
Alonso led the team in scoring in the SoCon Tournament, averaging 18.7 points per game. Alonso connected on just 36 percent (9-of-25) from 3-point land on the week, but hit 89.5 percent (17-of-19) from the free throw line. He started the tournament slowly with 11 points against The Citadel before scoring 17 against Wofford in the semifinals, including 8-of-8 from the free throw line. He capped the week with a career-high 28 points against ETSU, hitting 7-of-17 from the field and 9-of-11 from the free throw line.
Dickey was named to the All-Tournament team for his prowess on the glass, averaging a tournament best 10.7 rebounds per game while adding 5.3 points per game. He set a UNCG SoCon Tournament record in the quarterfinals with 19 rebounds and eight points against The Citadel. He followed that up with seven rebounds against Wofford and six rebounds against ETSU.
