GREENSBORO, N.C. - First-year UNC Greensboro baseball Head Coach Billy Godwin has filled his team's staff positions for the upcoming season, hiring Greg Starbuck and Hunter Allen as Assistant Coaches and Marty Gantt as a Volunteer Assistant. While Godwin focuses on the Spartan's battery, Starbuck will spearhead the squad's hitting and baserunning, as Allen will set his attention upon the UNCG infield and help with the hitting aspects of the game.
Former MLB draft pick Marty Gantt will have control of the outfield, in addition to helping Godwin with the Spartan pitching staff in the approaching campaign.
After spending the previous four years as a Volunteer Assistant with Clemson, Starbuck returns to the state of North Carolina to take over as an Assistant Coach with the UNCG baseball program. The Tigers collected two ACC Championships with Starbuck on staff, in addition to making four NCAA Regional appearances and producing 12 All-American honors.
Prior to his time in Clemson, the Kernersville native spent 17 years with Elon, 12 of which he held as the Phoenix' Associate Head Coach and Recruiting coordinator. Elon reached the NCAA tournament five years under the guidance of Starbuck, while securing four Southern Conference Regular Season titles and helping the program to 30-plus wins in 12 separate seasons.
An East Carolina baseball alum, Allen comes to Greensboro after spending the previous two years as a Volunteer Assistant with the Pirates. ECU hosted back-to-back regionals with Allen in the dugout, while advancing to the NCAA super regionals in 2019. Before returning to Greenville, Hunter spent time as an Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator for Brunswick Community College and Louisburg College. The former Pirate infielder received Most Outstanding Player of the AAC Tournament during his senior year of play at East Carolina, and is a former NJCAA Second Team All-American.
Spending the most recent baseball season as an Assistant Coach with Brunswick Community College, Gantt will take over UNCG's volunteer position while taking his first step into Division I coaching. The former College of Charleston outfielder has summer ball experience as well after spending the last two seasons as an Assistant with the Wilmington Sharks. Gantt reached as high as AA ball after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2012 and has also gained experience as the Montgomery Biscuits' scouting intern directly after his retirement at the end of the 2015 campaign.
