GREENSBORO, N.C. – Fresh off a four-game sweep of Princeton this weekend, the UNCG baseball team returns to action on Tuesday at 4 p.m. against longtime foe Elon, when the two meet at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

UNCG, which is 10-4 on the season, has won seven of its last eight games dating back to a 5-3 win over Penn on March 1st, with the lone setback coming against Winthrop (March 5). The Spartans are also looking to pick up their fourth win in the last five meetings versus the Phoenix (9-6) when they send Austin Parsley (1-0, 0.00 ERA) to the mound against Kyle Greenler (0-0, 1.34).

The Spartans claimed three straight wins over Elon between March 7, 2017 and March 7, 2018, but Elon snapped the streak with an 8-7 victory in Greensboro when the two teams last met on May 15, 2018.

ANALYZING THE GAME WITH ELON
-The March 12 meeting between Elon and UNCG marks the 55th all-time meeting between the two schools on the diamond. Elon holds the series lead (38-16), but the Spartans have won three of the last four games in the series, including three straight between March 7, 2017 to March 7, 2018.

-The Spartans are 12-19 all-time against Elon when playing in Greensboro with two of the wins being vacated in the 2011 campaign due to infractions. Five of the 12 home wins for the Spartans have come under current head coach Link Jarrett. The two teams have met four times at a neutral site, during the Southern Conference Tournament with Elon prevailing in all four contests. Elon owns a 14-5 lead in the series on its home turf, winning the only extra inning affair between the two programs at Elon on April 29, 2012 as the two battled for 10 innings.

-The Phoenix are one of four opponents that UNCG is scheduled to face both on the road and at home. The others include Wake Forest, Winthrop and High Point. UNCG and Elon has six common opponents this season including Wake Forest, N.C. A&T, Western Carolina, Quinnipiac, High Point and Campbell.

-Elon has been picked to win a competitive race for the CAA baseball title in 2019 according to a vote of the league’s head baseball coaches. The Phoenix received four first-place votes and finished atop the poll with 57 points. Following close behind in a tie for second with 54 points were defending CAA champion UNCW, which got one first-place vote, and back-to-back regular-season champion Northeastern, which picked up the other four first-place votes. Charleston was fourth with 47 points, followed by Delaware (34 points), James Madison (32 points), William & Mary (19 points), Hofstra (14 points) and Towson (13 points).

-The Spartans are 61-84 all-time against teams that make up the Colonial Athletic Association. Of the nine teams that make up the league, UNCG has squared off against six of them, the exceptions being William & Mary, Northeastern and Hofstra. The most wins have come against College of Charleston (20-30), followed by Elon (16-38), UNC Wilmington (12-10), Towson (6-1), Delaware (5-1) and James Madison (2-4).

-Elon returns five starters and several top pitchers from last year’s 36-23 squad that placed second in the CAA standings. The Phoenix pitching staff is headlined by a pair of preseason All-America honorees in junior right-handers Kyle Brnovich (8-2, 1.71 ERA, 147 K’s) and George Kirby (10-3, 2.89 ERA, 96 K’s). The bullpen includes Jared Wetherbee (2-1, 4 svs., 4.07 ERA) and Brandon Justice (0-3, 2 svs., 2.13 ERA). Three all-conference selections are back in the Elon lineup with infielders Cam Devanney (.287, 5 HR, 23 RB) and Joe Satterfield (.268, 4 HR, 43 RBI) and designated hitter Garrett Stonehouse (.268, 2 HR, 38 RBI) (statistics were heading into 2019 season).
