GREENSBORO, N.C. – After the departure of 14 letterwinners from the 2018 Southern Conference Regular Season Championship team, UNCG baseball has high expectations for the incoming recruiting class. The future Spartans did not disappoint this spring, as the group features several All-Conference and All-State honorees, as well as an NJCAA National Champion.
Zach Budzik of Sun Valley High earned First Team All-Southern Carolina Conference as an infielder, and earned the 2018 Greater Charlotte Hot Stove League High School Baseball Leadership Award. Hunter Corbett, a catcher from Deland High in Florida, was a preseason 2018 Rawlings/Perfect Game All-American Honorable Mention. He was his team’s Most Valuable Player and was invited to participate in the Florida Athletic Coaches Association’s 2018 All-Star Baseball Classic.
Pennsylvania-native Mike Ferrara of Archbishop Wood High earned All-Catholic honors at first base and earned a spot on the All-Southeastern Pennsylvania Hitting Team. Maddox Holshouser, a left-handed pitcher from Jesse Carson High, earned several honors. Holshouser was named All-County, All-Conference and earned North Carolina Baseball Coaches Association All-State.
Right-handed pitcher Austin Koehn comes to Greensboro after a highly decorated senior season. Koehn was named First Team All-County and First Team All-State at Patterson Mill High in Maryland. The week of April 30-May 11, Koehn earned Fox News Athlete of the Week, Baltimore Prep Player of the Week and Arena Club Athlete of the Week.
Jacquez Koonce earned First Team All-Conference honors as an outfielder at Gulf Coast State College in Florida.
Outfielder Jackson Prillaman of nearby Wesleyan Christian Academy finished the spring season earning All-Conference honors and was an All-Area Honorable Mention.
Spartan fans will recognize the name of Phillip Sanderson, a right-handed pitcher from Chipola College. Sanderson earned several awards this spring, including First Team All-Conference, FCSAA State All-Tournament team and the JR Memorial Award for the State Tournament’s Most Outstanding Pitcher. He helped lead Chipola to an NJCAA National Championship, earning NJCAA Baseball World Series Most Outstanding Player honors.
Infielder Nick Solomita of North Lincoln High was named his team’s Spark Plug player by his coaching staff. Solomita earned 2A Player of the Week honors by the Charlotte Observer in the last week of the season and was named South Fork 2A All-Conference.
Right-handed pitcher Jake Wolf of Middle Creek High earned All-Conference Honorable Mention and was nominated for the WRAL High School OT Player of the Year.
