UNCGSpartans.com 04-16-2018

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG baseball will host the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in a midweek tilt Tuesday night at the UNCG Baseball Stadium. The Spartans enter after taking two of three games from the ETSU Bucs over the weekend and are currently 6-2 in midweek games. Wake Forest enters after sweeping Boston College in Massachusetts last weekend. Overall, the Demon Deacons are 17-20 on the year and UNCG enters at 26-9.

There will be live stats and a video stream available for Tuesday’s matchup. Live stats will have a link on UNCGStats.com. The video feed will be on ESPN+, a new video streaming platform from the worldwide leader in sports. ESPN+ requires a $4.99 monthly subscription to view its events. Fans can sign up for the 30-day free trial available through American Express on the ESPN+ login page. Links for these services will be on the UNCG baseball schedule page.

The Spartans trail the all-time series with Wake Forest, 41-15 and are 5-5 in the Link Jarrett era. Earlier this season, UNCG defeated the Demon Deacons, 11-5 at David F. Couch Ballpark. The last meeting at the UNCG Baseball Stadium saw the Spartans earn an 18-3 victory. The Spartans scored multiple runs in five innings in the contest for the lopsided win on 90s night at the ballpark. Tomorrow’s game is also 90s night at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

Last weekend’s three-game series was moved from Sunday to a doubleheader Saturday due to inclement weather. The Spartans won Friday night and split the doubleheader Saturday. The loss in the doubleheader is the first time in four doubleheaders this season that UNCG dropped a doubleheader game. UNCG split two games last week with North Carolina A&T and Charlotte.

Jake Mayhew will get the start Tuesday night. It will be his fifth start of the season and his second against Wake Forest. He earned his first collegiate win earlier this season after tossing five innings against Oakland. The Spartans are 4-0 when Mayhew gets the start. This is his third career-appearance against Wake Forest, having earned his first career strikeout in the 90s night midweek game in 2016.

At the plate, junior Andrew Moritz paces the nation’s fourth-best offense. Moritz leads the team with a .437 average after going 11-for-16 last week. Moritz has connected on 16 extra-base hits and leads the team with six triples. It’s the third-straight season he’s earned at least six triples and he has now set the record for triples in a career at 19. He’s hit three home runs this season, and of his seven career homers, two have been against the Demon Deacons. Cesar Trejo has been a force in the middle of the lineup this season. The junior hits at a .391 average with 20 extra-base hits. He leads the team with 12 doubles, 36 RBI and is a perfect 17-for-17 in stolen bases.

The Demon Deacon offense hits at a .255 average. Jake Mueller leads the team with a .320 batting average, with four extra-base hits. Mueller also leads the team with 12 stolen bases and has been caught stealing four times. Bobby Seymour hits at a .315 clip with 12 extra-base hits, including four home runs. Jonny Aiello leads the team with seven home runs and has driven in 32 runs. He’s swiped seven bases and owns a .465 slugging percentage.

Wake Forest has yet to declare a starter for Tuesday’s game. Jared Shuster started the midweek contest between the two teams earlier in the season. Rayne Supple, Tyler Witt and Shane Muntz have worked exclusively out of the bullpen. Supple leads the team with six saves, earning a 2-1 record in 28.0 innings. He’s worked 16 games out of the bullpen and struck out 31 hitters to earn a 1.29 ERA. Witt has appeared in 19 games, going 0-2 and earning a 3.10 ERA. He’s struck out 28 hitters in 29.0 innings of work. Muntz has gone 1-1 in 11 appearances. In his 13.0 innings, he’s struck out eight hitters and earned a 4.85 ERA.
