Collin Woody Shines in Return to Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Former UNCG baseball player Collin Woody (Tampa, Fla./College of Central Florida) returned to the Gate City for a regular season contest against the Greensboro Grasshoppers Tuesday night. Woody, a 38th round draft pick by the Baltimore Orioles in the 2016 draft, is currently playing his first complete professional season with the Class A Delmarva Shorebirds.

The former Spartan put together one of his most successful nights at the plate in his young professional career as he went 4-for-5 with three home runs, a triple, five RBI, and scored three runs. Woody provided the bulk of the offense for the Shorebirds, who scored 11 runs on 14 hits and were aided by one Grasshopper error.

A consistent approach was key to Woody’s success. In an article for MiLB.com, Woody stated, “I just tried to really slow everything down and go back to the basics. I was thinking ‘Ok, very slow load, make sure you see the pitch and just stay disciplined in my approach.’ with looking for a good hittable pitch out over the middle of the plate. It ended up working, so hopefully I can continue that.”

In his first at bat of the night, the former first team All-SoCon performer dug himself an 0-2 hole before hammering an inside fastball over the fence in left. His second at bat was a similar result, this time taking the first offering out of the ballpark. In his third at bat, the Shorebird third baseman worked a 2-0 count before barreling up the pitch for another home run, this to right center field. After a pop up to short in the seventh inning, Woody got another chance with a runner in scoring position in the top of the ninth. He drove an 0-2 pitch down the third baseline and had it skip away from the left fielder, allowing him to take third for his fourth triple of the season. The three home run performance is the first since the Yermin Mercedes accomplished the same feat on July 23rd, 2016 and finished one base shy of the South Atlantic League single-game total bases record with 15 on the night.

Ultimately the Shorebirds gave up five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, falling 12-11 at First National Bank Field in downtown Greensboro. Delmarva and the Grasshoppers are back in action Wednesday and Thursday night at 7 p.m. for their final matchups of the regular season.
