Baseball To Host Lafayette For the First Time Since 2009
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG baseball will host the Lafayette Leopards in a four-game series beginning Thursday afternoon. The series features a single game Thursday, a doubleheader Friday, and a single game on Saturday. UNCG enters the weekend 8-8 on the season, while Lafayette comes in at 2-14.
Live stats will be available for each game of the series. Thursday’s game features a live stream on the UNCG Sports YouTube channel. Friday and Saturday will feature audio-only broadcasts on uncgspartans.com/radio.

Scouting the Spartans
UNCG comes in having split a four-game series with the Princeton Tigers last weekend. UNCG fell 5-3 in the opening game before taking games two and four of the series. The Spartans used a dominant performance from Bryce Hensley (Asheville, N.C./Catawba Valley CC) to secure the victory in the second game. The Blue and Gold used three pitchers to combine to defeat Princeton in the series finale. The Spartans are hitting over the .300 mark as a team and have scored 108 runs on the season. Six players are hitting above the .300 plateau, with a pair of hitters at or over .400.
Last week, Austin Embler (Southern Pines, N.C./Pinecrest) hit for a .545 average in five games, earning the Southern Conference’s Player of the Week award. Embler had a hit in every game, and recorded multiple hits in all but one on the week. The Spartans have hit 28 doubles, led by Embler and Caleb Webster (Randleman, N.C./Randleman) who have each hit four. UNCG has connected for seven triples by six different players. Andrew Moritz (Charlottte, N.C./Providence) has hit for a .371 average this season, and is currently on a 12-game hit streak, and has reached base in 55 of 57 career games played. Moritz is tied with Dillon Stewart (Dunn, N.C./Brunswick CC) for the team lead with four stolen bases on the year. Stewart is tied with Michael Goss (Cartersville, Ga./Chattanooga State CC) and Ryan Clinch (Jamestown, N.C./Brunswick CC) for the team-lead with two home runs each. Embler leads the squad with 14 RBI.
UNCG will feature the same rotation this weekend as the previous four weeks. Jack Maynard (Crozet, Va./Patrick Henry CC) will start Thursday night. The junior right-handed pitcher has thrown in 19.0 innings, striking out 19 hitters. His last start against Princeton was his first quality start. Maynard threw 6.1 innings, surrendering five hits two earned runs and fanning eight hitters. Hensley had his most dominant outing of his career against Princeton. The junior threw 8.0 innings, allowing just three hits and an unearned run. He struck out 13 hitters, the most by a UNCG pitcher since Chris Mason in the 2005 season. Matt Frisbee (Candler, N.C./Enka) has logged a team-high 25.1 innings, striking ou 19 batters. Frisbee has earned a 3-1 record with a 3.20 ERA.
The Spartan bullpen has been anchored by juniors Andrew Wantz (Holly Springs, N.C./Holly Springs), Chad Sykes (Creedmoor, N.C./Voyager Academy) and Alex Sova (Midland, Mich./Kellogg CC). Wantz has appeared in a team-high eight games, logging 20.2 innings. He has struck out 30 batters and is holding opponents to a .197 average against him. Wantz has earned a 3-2 record with one save while earning a 3.92 ERA. Sykes has made seven appearances out of the bullpen, picking up two saves in the process. He has logged 10.1 innings, striking out ten batters, earning a 1.74 ERA. Sykes has fanned at least one hitter in his last 29 outings. Sova has appeared in five games, earning a 2.45 ERA in 7.1 innings. He has struck out nine batters and holds opponents to a .167 average against.
Scouting the Leopards
Lafayette has played in 16 games this season, all away from home. They have played 10 neutral site games, and are 0-6 in true away games. The Leopards opened the season with a 10-2 victory against Notre Dame at a neutral site matchup in San Antonio. Following the victory, Lafayette dropped eight-straight before defeating Coppin State in another neutral site game, this time in Washington D.C. Lafayette has dropped six-straight matchups, most recently being swept by Georgetown at the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla.
The Leopard offense has hit for a team average of .257. Lafayette has five players hitting over .300 that have played in at least 14 games. Steven Cohen leads the team with a .328 average, starting in all 16 games. Cohen has scored 10 runs and stolen three bases on the season. Dan Leckie provides the thump in the Leopard lineup. Leckie has hit a team-best four home runs and two doubles, with eight RBI. Luke Robinson has recorded 10 RBI, a team best. Robinson is hitting at a .304 average with two home runs, a triple and four doubles. Quentin Bubb leads the squad with six stolen bases, hitting at a .313 average in all 16 games. Bugg has gone for extra bases twice in his 20 hits, driving in seven runs and scoring eight more.
Trevor Houck will oppose Maynard in the series opener. Houck has started four games, earning a 1-2 record and logging a team-best 26.0 innings. The senior has struck out 17 hitters earning a 4.50 ERA. David Giusti has appeared in six games, making five starts. Guisti has thrown in 16.0 innings, striking out 11 hitters and has earned a 1-4 record. Brett Kreyer is scheduled to start the third game of the series. Kreyer has started four games, earning a 4.56 ERA and an 0-3 record. Kreyer has logged 23.2 innings, striking out 17 batters and holds opponents to a .242 average against. The final starter will be announced prior to Saturday’s game. Connor Jones and Kyle Johnson have handled the bulk of the bullpen duties. Jones has appeared in eight games, logging 13.2 innings with six strikeouts. He has earned a 3.95 ERA and an 0-1 record. Johnson has appeared in seven games with 11.1 innings of work. He has struck out 10 batters. Mark Anderson has appeared in four games out of the bullpen, earning Lafayette’s lone save of the season.
