Baseball Adds Eight for 2017-18 Season
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG Baseball head coach Link Jarrett has announced the addition of eight players for the upcoming 2017-18 academic year. All parts of the field are represented in this class, with three infielders, two pitchers, an outfielder and a catcher-outfielder combination.
Chase Bishop – C – Lake Norman HS – 5’8’’ – 185 – R/R
Chase Bishop, a catcher from Lake Norman High School, will be joining UNCG. Bishop has earned two letters at Lake Norman. As a sophomore, he hit for a .319 average, with a pair of doubles, a home run and stole three bases. He earned a .977 fielding percentage as the team’s catcher. In his junior season, Bishop connected for three doubles, a pair of triples, a home run and a stolen base, while earning a .966 fielding percentage.
Bishop plays for Team Rawlings of the Carolinas in the summer. He has competed in the Powerade State Games, was an All-County selection while placing on the A-B honor roll.
Grayson Chapman – OF – Alexander Central HS – 6’2’’ – 190 – L/L
Grayson Chapman is an outfielder that has played his prep career at Alexander Central High School. Chapman hit for a .312 average as a sophomore. He added a pair of doubles and stole four bases. Chapman improved his numbers in his junior season, hitting for a .368 average with 12 doubles, a triple, four homers and three stolen bases. He was named North Piedmont Conference Player of the Year, earned All-State honors and was the team Most Valuable Player for Alexander Central.
Greg Hardison Jr. – INF – JH Rose HS – 6’1’’ – 165 – L/R
Greg Hardison Jr. is a highly decorated infielder from JH Rose High School in Greenville, N.C. As a sophomore, Hardison hit for a .362 average with a pair of doubles. He was also a threat on the bases, going 18-of-19. He was named the JH Rose Co-Defensive Player of the Year after posting a .962 fielding percentage. He was a First Team All-Eastern Carolina Conference, and was named First Team All-Area by the Daily Reflector. He was a six-time Max Preps Player of the game and was the Max Preps Player of the Year. He was also a Region 1 North Carolina State Games Selection.
As a junior, Hardison hit for a .356 average, connecting for nine doubles and a home run. He also swiped 20-of-21 bases and earned a .956 fielding percentage. He was a First Team All-Eastern Carolina Conference selection, as well as First Team All-Area by the Daily Reflector. He was also a six-time Max Preps Player of the Game and was named Max Preps Player of the Year for Rose HS. He was again selected to the Region 1 North Carolina State Games.
He also competed with the Evoshield Canes 17U Coastal team in the WWBA, as well as with the Carolina Cubs 2017 Elite Blue in the WWBA. He was a 2012 Babe Ruth State Champion, Southeast Regional Champion, and finished as a World Series Runner-up. He was also a 2011 and 2008 North Carolina Little League State Champion. Academically, he is a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society.
Gerald Hein – Kennewick HS (Wash.) – LHP – 6’2’’ – 225 – L/L
Gerald Hein is a left-handed pitcher that joins UNCG from Kennewick High School in Kennewick, Washington. This upcoming season he will be competing at Yakima Valley Community College in Yakima, Washington. At Kennewick, Hein went 21-4 in 32 starts. He threw in 171 innings, fanning 199 hitters in the process. He walked just 37 batters in his final season, and earned a 1.85 ERA in two seasons.
Hein also earned the Bob Feller Pitching Award, and earned the most strikeouts in the Regional and World Series tournaments, combined.
Josh Madole – Topsail HS – 1B – 6’1’’ – 200 – L/L
Josh Madole is a first baseman that competes at Topsail High School in Hampstead, N.C. Madole hit for a .323 average as a sophomore, earning three doubles, stealing a pair of bases, while recording a .978 fielding percentage. As a junior, Madole hit for a .305 average, with eight doubles and a home run with two stolen bases. His fielding improved as well, upping his fielding percentage to .982.
Madole competed for the Dirt Bags 17U Daly and was named to the WABA Perfect Game All-Tournament Team. Academically, he is a member of the National Honor Society.
Jack Ponder – Enka HS – RHP – 6’6’’ – 190 – R/R
Jack Ponder will be the second pitching prospect from Enka High School to join UNCG within the last three seasons. Ponder will join fellow Jet, Matt Frisbee (Candler, N.C./Enka) in Greensboro. Ponder appeared in 11 games in his sophomore season, recording 39 strikeouts in 26 innings pitched while earning a 2.42 ERA. In his junior season, Ponder appeared in 12 games with eight starts. In 39 innings, he recorded 59 strikeouts with a 3.59 ERA.
His individual awards include ranking sixth in strikeouts per innings pitched as a sophomore, and third as a junior. In 2016, he threw the fourth no-hitter in Enka High School history. He was also named the 2016 Mission Spotlight Player, and competed at the 2015 and 2016 Powerade State Games. He has earned letters all three seasons he’s played at Enka.
Coleman Sawyer – JH Rose HS – C/OF – 6’0’’ – 185 – S/R
Coleman Sawyer joins UNCG from JH Rose High School where he was a teammate with fellow newcomer Hardison. At Rose HS in Greenville, Sawyer has caught every inning in both his sophomore and junior seasons. As a sophomore, he hit for a .342 average with a pair of doubles. He recorded a .982 fielding percentage as a sophomore, and a .988 clip as a junior. His junior season at the plate, he hit for a .318 average with six doubles.
Individual awards include being named Most Outstanding Defensive Player, was Honorable Mention All-Conference. He was also Second Team All-County as a sophomore. He was named the Most Outstanding Defensive Player again as a junior, while earning First Team All-Eastern Carolina Conference, Honorable Mention All-County, represented Region 1 in the North Carolina State games. He also helped lead Rose to the fourth round of the state playoffs.
Sawyer also played for the Evoshield Canes Coastal 17U team as a catcher and an outfielder. He was a two-time Perfect Game WWBA All-Tournament Team selection. He is a member of the National Honor Society, National Math Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, National Social Studies Honor Society, while being a member of SGA, Dream Team Club and Young Republicans and is a sports staff writer for his school newspaper.
Hogan Windish – Ashe County HS – INF – 6’1’’ – 180 – R/R
Hogan Windish rounds out the incoming class. Windish is a shortstop that has played at Ashe County High School in Jefferson, N.C. As a sophomore, Windish hit for a .428 average with six doubles while stealing 12 bases, while adding a .947 fielding percentage. He was named First Team All-Mountain Valley Conference. As a junior, he upped his batting average to .453, connecting for eight doubles, a triple, a pair of home runs, and swiped 16 bases. He also improved his fielding percentage to .962 while being named First Team All-Mountain Valley Conference and led the Mountain Valley in batting average and OPS. He has earned varsity letters in all three seasons at Ashe County.
Along with competing for Region 7 in the 2016 Powerade State Games, Windish was selected to the Perfect Game 201 17U WWBA national tournament team with a .450 batting average. In the 2016 showcase season, Windish hit for a .538 average with 21 doubles, four triples, a home run and 20 stolen bases. Academically, Windish was been a member of the honor rolls all three seasons, member of the National Beta Club, and National Technical Honor Society member.
The Spartans start the 2017 season on Feb. 17th in Columbia, S.C. as they take on the South Carolina Gamecocks at 4:00 p.m. at Founders Park.
