Gold Uses Six-Run Shotgun Inning to Take Fall Intrasquad Championship
Gold’s Bryce Hensley (Asheville, N.C./Catawba Valley CC) turned in a stellar performance on the hill, going 5.1 innings, scattering five hits, striking out one batter while allowing only one earned run. Alex Sova (Midland, Mich./Kellogg CC) logged 1.1 innings, without allowing a run. Jake Lewis (Wendell, N.C./Corinth Holders) picked up the save, entering with two outs in the final frame with runners on the corners.
Trevor Clemons (Randleman, N.C./Randleman) finished 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI for the Gold team. Tripp Shelton (Winston-Salem, N.C./West Forsyth) finished the afternoon 3-for-4 with a double. Austin Embler (Southern Pines, N.C./Pinecrest) went 1-for-3, drove in two runs and drew a walk. Trevor Heasley (Apex, N.C./Middle Creek) added a hit, a walk and drove in a run. Cesar Trejo (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale added a pair of RBI.
Michael Bates (Winston-Salem, N.C./West Forsyth) started for the Navy squad. Bates threw 3.0 innings, allowing seven hits, a pair of earned runs and picked up a strikeout. Chad Sykes (Creedmoor, N.C./Voyager Academy) threw the last 2.0 innings without allowing a hit and struck out two batters.
Michael Goss (Cartersville, Ga./Chattanooga St. CC) led the Navy hitters with a 2-for-3 performance, with a double, a triple and an RBI. Ben Spitznagel (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wabash Valley CC) finished with a hit and a walk. Caleb Webster (Randleman, N.C./Randleman) added an RBI.
The teams were selected by a draft from two captains. Junior right handed pitcher Andrew Wantz (Holly Springs, N.C./Holly Springs) picked the Gold squad, while senior catcher Jake Kusz (Riverside, N.C./Durham) selected the Navy team.
Senior Catcher Jake Kusz – “This is tough. I thought I put a good team together, we came out and played well. We got down in game one but we did a great job in game two getting after it and taking the lead. Unfortunately, on day three, Gold outplayed us. I still would take my team, love my guys, and hopefully they can get it back next year.”
Redshirt Senior First Baseman Michael Goss – “This is always a great way to end the fall. It was a tough fall season, and we came out here and put the work in. It was good to see us come out here and play three competitive games. A hit here or there could have changed the series, but I think overall, both teams played well. Spartan fans should be excited, we have a lot to look forward to in the spring.”
Senior Second Baseman/Outfielder Ben Spitznagel – “It (Fall Intrasquad Championship) was a lot of fun. We had some guys in different positions that they weren’t used to and they performed well. Everybody came out and worked hard, a lot of different guys came up with some big hits. Everybody came out and did their part, it was good to see and I’m excited for the spring.”
Junior Pitcher Andrew Wantz – “We came out on Sunday and we started well. We utilized Wake Forest’s field to our advantage, three long balls helped us get out to a quick start. We battled through some adversity with our centerfielder getting sick, so we made a trade for (Matt) Gould to catch and he really filled the gap for us. Monday came around and we got outplayed, outhit, outpitched. Today we came out focused and we played our game and were able to take the series.”
Senior Infielder/Outfielder Dillon Stewart – “Being able to get out here and scrimmage with something behind it is really fun. The games add another level of intensity instead of just coming out for practice. It adds more of a game-like atmosphere, when you get people out here to watch, get umpires, it’s the most game-like atmosphere we have until the spring and I think that helps people make the transition to spring. It was really fun. I think (Andrew) Wantz put together a great team and the freshmen came in and swung it extremely well. (Trevor) Clemons was unreal. Bryce (Hensley) came out and pitched a great game today and gave us the win.
