Gold Uses Three Home Runs to Take an Early Lead in the Fall Intrasquad Championship
After the first day of action, the Gold squad leads Navy 11-7. It was the first of three games that will be played during the week. Each game is a seven-inning contest with one Shotgun Inning. During the Shotgun Inning, each team gets to choose which inning to start with the bases loaded and no outs. The series will be scored with a running total of runs scored for the three games.
Matt Frisbee (Candler, N.C./Enka) started for the Gold squad. The sophomore threw 4.0 innings, scattering four hits and striking out four batters.
Austin Embler (Southern Pines, N.C./Pinecrest) finished the afternoon 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI. Tripp Shelton (Winston-Salem, N.C./West Forsyth) finished 2-for-5 with a two-run home run. Dillon Stewart (Dunn, N.C./Brunswick CC) went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and a three run homer. Cesar Trejo (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) added a pair of hits including a grand slam home run.
Dan Loats (Eden Prairie, Minn./NIACC) started for the Navy team. Loats went 3.2 innings, allowing three earned runs, five hits and struck out three batters. Travis Tuttle (Winston-Salem, N.C./Surrey CC) worked in 1.2 innings, allowing one run and striking out a batter.
Ben Spitznagel (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wabash Valley CC), an All-American during the 2016 season, went 2-for-2 with a double, drew two walks, drove in a pair of runs and swiped three bases. JoJo Underwood (Cartersville, Ga./Chattanooga St. CC) finished 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI. Caleb Webster (Randleman, N.C./Randleman) also added a hit and an RBI. The Navy squad did the bulk of its damage in the Shotgun innings, scoring six runs.
The second game of the three-game fall series will be played this evening at the UNCG Baseball Stadium with the final game of the series being played Tuesday evening.
