GREENSBORO, N.C. – After opening the season with a 2-1 weekend in Fleming, UNCG volleyball sets out for their first road challenges of 2019 this Friday and Saturday, with matches against Southern, Incarnate Word and UT-Arlington at the annual Maverick Classic.

The Spartans open their road trip with a 5 p.m. Friday contest against Southern, before competing in a Saturday doubleheader with Incarnate Word and hosts UTA at 12 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. respectively. This will be UNCG's first trip to Texas in roughly four years, when the Spartans competed in the Baylor Classic in Waco.

Five Facts To Know

--The Spartans kicked off the 2019 season with back-to-back wins for the second time in the past three years, dropping NC Central and Presbyterian by respective scores of 3-1 and 3-0.

--UNCG's record against NCCU and PC now stands at 13-1 all-time, last losing to the Eagles back in 1987.

--Junior Holly Behrends recorded a team-high 30 kills over the Spartans' three-matches to open the season last weekend, including a match-high 13 kills in her team's victory over Presbyterian.

--Freshman Gabriela McHugh received SoCon Setter of the Week honors this past Monday after collecting 108 assists in her first week of regular season play under Head Coach Corey Carlin.

--In addition to McHugh, the current freshman class was recognized by Prepvolleyball.com as one of the top recruiting classes in the country, being named to the 2019 Top 30 recruiting classes honorable mention list back in May.

Series History
--UNCG's trip to Texas is their first since 2015, where the Spartans faced Rice, Baylor and Stephen F. Austin.

--The Spartans' will play Southern, Incarnate Word and UT-Arlington for the first time in their program history this Friday and Saturday.

--This is the eighth consecutive year Arlington has hosted the Maverick Classic/UTA Invitational; UNCG is just the second team from the state of North Carolina to ever compete in the event.

Upcoming For The Spartans

The Spartans return to Fleming Gym to matchup with ACC opponent Duke next Tuesday, battling with the Blue Devils at home for just the second time in program history. 

50 Years of UNCG Volleyball

The 2019 season will be a special one for the program, as UNCG volleyball is celebrating its 50th anniversary. The program will be hosting a special celebration during the weekend of Friday, Oct. 18 and Saturday, Oct. 19. The weekend will include an alumni vs. alumni match, a program history celebration luncheon and recognition of several distinguished alumni from the program’s past.
