Penner and Gregory Sweep SoCon Weekly Awards
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Juniors Allison Penner (Aurora, Neb./Aurora) and Christina Gregory (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) swept the Southern Conference’s weekly awards for their performances last week. Penner earned her first Offensive Player of the Week award of her career, with Gregory taking home her third Defensive Player of the Week award this season, and the sixth of her career.
UNCG went 2-0 last week, knocking off two of the top three teams in the SoCon at home. The Spartans knocked off the league’s top team in Furman, 3-1 before defeating then third-place Wofford 3-2. UNCG took over third place in the Southern Conference standings and have now won six-straight and eight of their last nine matches.
Penner earned 106 assists in the two matches last weekend, averaging 11.78 per set. She facilitated a Spartan offense that scored 63 kills and hit at a .236 average. She recorded a .375 assist percentage as she connected on 106 assists on 283 attempts. She added four service aces on the weekend, with three coming against Furman. With Penner running the offense, UNCG saw five players record double-digit kills over the weekend. She added five kills on 14 attacks against the Paladins, and finished the weekend with a career-best six kills on 15 error-less attacks in the victory over Wofford. Also against the Terriers, Penner was big at the net as she partnered with Annchara Montgomery (Indianapolis, Ind./Illinois State) to stuff a Catie Cronister attack at the net and force match point in the fifth set. She also recorded her 12th and 13th double doubles on the season as she recorded 10 or more digs in each match.
Gregory played in all nine sets last weekend, totaling 47 digs. She scored 23 in the four-set match with Furman before coming back to tally 24 digs the following night against Wofford. This is the third time this season that Gregory has scored 20 or more digs in back-to-back matches. The Spartan libero was perfect in service reception as she successfully handled 26 opponent serves without an error. On the offensive end, she scored six assists on the weekend and scored her fifth kill of the season against the Terriers.
Penner, Gregory and the rest of the Spartans return to the court this Wednesday as they host the Western Carolina Catamounts at 7 p.m. for the final home game of the 2017 season.
