GREENSBORO, N.C.– After the UNC Greensboro volleyball team went up 2-0, Samford won the next two sets to tie the match at two to force a final set. With Samford (8-10, 3-1 Southern Conference) up 7-3 in the final set, the Spartans (9-9, 3-2 SoCon) scored 12 of the final 17 points to win the match 3-2 (25-22, 25-16, 18-25, 23-25, 15-12) Saturday in Fleming Gymnasium.
Sophomore outside hitter Holly Behrends led the team with 15 kills, while senior setter Allison Penner recorded another double-double with a team-high 46 assists and 15 digs and senior libero Christina Gregory led the team with 18 digs.
Sophomore outside hitter Maria Esch added 13 kills and junior outside hitter Emily Keilen added 11 kills, while freshman defensive specialist Stephanie Meysembourg added 11 digs and junior defensive specialist Grace Howell added 10 digs.
The Spartans scored nine of the first 13 points of the first set to take a five-point lead, 9-4, but Samford scored seven of the next 10 points to cut the lead to a point, 12-11. UNCG scored the next four points to increase the lead to five points, 16-11, but despite Samford outscoring the Spartans 11-9 during the rest of the set, the Spartans won the set by three points and took a 1-0 match lead.
UNCG scored 13 of the first 20 points in the second frame to take a six-point lead, 13-7, but Samford scored three of the next four points to cut the lead to four points, 14-10. The Spartans scored 11 of the final 17 points to win the set by nine points and to take a 2-0 match lead.
Samford scored nine of the first 12 points to take a six-point lead, 9-3, in the third stanza, but the Spartans scored four of the next five points to cut the lead to three points, 11-8. The Bulldogs scored 14 of the final 24 points to win the set by seven points and to cut the match lead to 2-1.
The Bulldogs scored nine of the first 16 points to take a two-point lead, 9-7, in the fourth set, but UNCG scored five of the next eight points to tie the set at 12. Samford scored seven of the next nine points to take a five-point lead, 19-14, but the Spartans scored six of the next seven points to tie the set at 20. Samford scored five of the final eight points to win the set by two points and to tie the match at two.
Samford scored seven of the first 10 points to take a four-point lead, 7-3, in the final frame forcing a UNCG timeout. After the timeout, the Spartans scored five of the next eight points to cut the lead to two points, 10-8. Then UNCG scored five consecutive points to take a two-point lead, 13-11. After a kill from Samford to cut the lead to a point, 13-12, back-to-back kills from Esch gave the Spartans the two-point set win and the match win.
The Bulldogs were led by Krista Boesing with a match-high 25 kills, Taylor Anderton with a match-high 55 assists and Grace Tiesman with 19 digs. Lauren Deaton recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs.
The Spartans finish the three match homestand Wednesday against ETSU at 7 p.m. in Fleming Gymnasium.
