Volleyball And Women's Track/Cross Country Receive NCAA APR Public Recognition Awards
GREESNBORO, N.C. – The UNCG volleyball, women's track and women's cross country programs were recognized as 2017 APR Public Recognition Award winners by the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA), Wednesday. The award is given to athletic teams ranking in the top 10 percent of Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores within Division I in their respective sports.
This year's honors mark the 12th consecutive year that UNCG has at least two programs earn NCAA Public Recognition honors for APR. The volleyball, women's track and women's cross country teams are three of just 22 programs in the Southern Conference to earn the public recognition for 2017.
“We are pleased that our programs are continuing to excel academically,” UNCG Director of Athletics Kim Record said. “The volleyball and women's track/cross country teams are leading the way for our department with their public recognition this year. We are proud of the academic success of our student-athletes and our goal is to continually improve our scores across the board each year.”
Each year, the NCAA honors selected NCAA Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate. This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports. Teams honored by the NCAA earned multiple Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores in the top 10 percent for their sport.
The most recent APR score is based on the scores from the 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16 academic years. The public recognition awards are part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and are intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
