Volleyball Hosts End of the Year Banquet at the Kaplan Wellness Center
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG volleyball hosted its annual banquet this afternoon inside the new Kaplan Wellness Center Saturday afternoon. The event celebrated another successful volleyball season under head coach Corey Carlin.
2016 was another highly successful season for UNCG volleyball, not only on the court, but also in the classroom. The team earned its first-ever American Volleyball Coaches Association’s (AVCA) Team Academic Award. The award goes to volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative grad point average on a 4.0 scale.
On the court, the team finished the 2016 season with an 18-13 record, and 11-5 in the Southern Conference. The 11-5 conference record marks the third-straight season the team has hit the 11-win. The Spartans earned five individual SoCon awards, leading the league in All-SoCon accolades.
Ashley Muench (Hurdle Mills, N.C./Orange) and Allison Penner (Aurora, Neb./Aurora) garnered first team honors, with Christina Gregory (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) and Jasmine Jones (Stafford, Va./Brook Point) taking home second team honors. Gregory also earned the SoCon’s Libero of the Year award.
UNCG ranked in the top 50 nationally in several categories. Finishing seventh in digs per set average (17.82), ninth in attack attempts per set average (38.44), ninth in total digs (2,156), 17th in total attack attempts (4,652), 38th in total assists (1,558), 43rd in total kills (1,650) and 49th in assists per set average (12.88).
Three Spartans ranked in the top 50 in individual statistics. Christina Gregory ranked 13th in the nation and set a new school record, recording 5.25 digs per set. Allison Penner ranked 30th in assists per set average (10.95) with Ashley Muench ranking 39th in total attack attempts (1,309) and 44th in total kills (471).
During the season, three Spartans earned career milestones. Two recorded over 1,000 career kills. Jessica Brezwyn (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) and Muench earned that honor. Penner has tallied 2,000 career assists in just two seasons in Greensboro.
Five team awards were handed out during the banquet. The Spartan Academic Award is presented to the player with the highest grade point average. Two players earned a 4.0 GPA, with Katie Wagner (Knoxville, Tenn./Hardin Valley Academy) and Penner taking home the honor.
Along with being named the Southern Conference’s Libero of the Year, Gregory earned the Spartan Strength award, which goes to the player who made the most strength gains throughout the season. Gregory also earned the Most Improved Award.
Mikaela Weidmann (Roswell, Ga./Centennial) earned the Coaches Award, going to the player with the best attitude and work ethic to improve skills. Wrapping up the awards was Wagner, who took home the Spiro Best Teammate award. The Spiro Best Teammate award is voted on by the team.
