Volleyball Travels to Birmingham for Southern Conference Tournament
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG volleyball hits the road for Birmingham, Ala. for the Southern Conference Volleyball Tournament, hosted by Samford University. UNCG earned the second seed in this year’s tournament, the highest seed the Spartans have earned in the SoCon tournament. UNCG will take on Western Carolina in the first tournament match for both teams at 6:00 p.m. Saturday evening.
There will be live stats available for each match, as well as a video stream. All matches in the SoCon Volleyball Tournament will be streamed on the SoCon Digital Network, with the championship match being streamed on ESPN3. Links for these will be available on the UNCG volleyball schedule page and on SoConSports.com.
UNCG enters the tournament with a 17-12 record, and 11-5 in SoCon play. Four Spartans earned All-SoCon honors, led by Libero of the Year Christina Gregory (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy). Gregory also picked up second team All-SoCon honors. Ashley Muench (Hurdle Mills, N.C./Orange) and Allison Penner (Aurora, Neb./Aurora) earned first team honors, with Jasmine Jones (Stafford, Va./Brook Point) picking up second team honors. The four selections were tied for the most of any team in the league.
Muench leads the team with 429 kills this season, earning 3.86 per set. Three others have earned over 220 kills on the year, including Jones who has racked up 254. Her .310 average is best on the team. Alexis Mourier (Elkview, W.Va./George Washington) and Jessica Brezwyn (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) have notched 239 and 221 kills, respectively.
Penner leads the SoCon with a 10.88 digs per set average, having totaled 1,055 this season. The first team All-SoCon selection has earned 245 digs, with a 2.53 per set average. She has earned 12 double-doubles this season.
UNCG’s defense ranks seventh in the nation, averaging 17.83 digs per set this season. Gregory leads the SoCon with a 5.23 per set average, and ranks seventh in the nation. Muench contributes on the backend as well, having earned 283 digs. Anna Romaniszyn (Port Orange, Fla./Spruce Creek) and Ronni Katarzynski (Winfield, Ill./West Chicago) have earned 243 and 245, respectively.
The Catamounts had a pair of players earn All-SoCon honors. Outside hitter Abigail Veit and middle blocker Aleah Keaton each earned spots on the All-Freshman team.
Veit leads the Catamount offense with 291 kills this season, followed by Alyssa Zupan’s 214 kills. Overall, the Catamounts hit at a .162 average, with 11.66 kills per set. Keaton’ has
Jo-Leigh VerVelde facilitates the Catamount offense, having earned 816 kills this season. Her 9.27 assists per set average ranks second in the conference behind Penner. VerVelde has also earned 251 digs, third on the team with a 2.85 per set average.
The Catamount defense is second in the conference with a 16.04 digs per set average. Meagan Sanchez leads the charge with 483 digs, averaging 4.51 per set. Three others have earned at least 150 digs this season, including Veit with 324 (3.03 per set), VerVelde, Zupan at 182 (1.73 per set), Gaby Edmondson with 163 (2.63 per set), and Reeve Reinsborough chipping in 154 (1.45 per set).
