GREENSBORO, N.C. – After winning five of its last seven matches the UNCG women’s tennis team earned the No. 4 seed at the SoCon Championships, which begin on Thursday, April 18th at 8:30 a.m. at the John Drew Tennis Center in Macon, Ga.

The Spartans won the head-to-head meeting between the two programs in the regular season by a 5-2 margin, which took place on March 30th. UNCG claimed five of the six wins in singles play en route to a victory in its home finale.

UNCG capped off the regular season with a 9-11 mark, finishing 3-4 in SoCon play, as the Spartans tallied consecutive wins over Western Carolina (5-2), Samford (5-2) and Chattanooga (6-1) in the final three weeks of the season. The Spartans were led individually by the play of Brianna Gomez (11 singles wins), Nancy Bridges (10) and Sophia Adams (10). The team of Bridges and Erika Barquero, who finished 7-6 on the season, was also instrumental in UNCG’s success.

For their outstanding play, Bridges and Barquero, were honored by the league on Tuesday, April 16th. Bridges was named First Team All-SoCon in singles, while Barquero earned All-Freshman honors and the two paired for a First Team doubles selection.

Bridges is the first player from UNCG to be named First Team All-SoCon since the 2013 season, when Niltooli Wilkins earned the distinction. Barquero became the sixth Spartan to garner SoCon All-Freshman team honors and third from UNCG be named to the unit in as many years, joining Adams and Gomez.

Samford’s season ended with a 12-10 overall mark and a 3-4 record in SoCon play. The Bulldogs closed out the regular season with back-to-back wins over Wofford (4-3) and Chattanooga (4-3) after enduring a four-match losing streak that spanned from March 23-April 5.

LAST MATCH RECAP (vs. East Tennessee State)
The UNCG women’s tennis team had their four-match winning streak come to a halt following a 5-2 setback to East Tennessee State on Wednesday, April 10.

ETSU (11-9, 5-1 SoCon) secured the first point of the match after sweeping doubles play. The Bucs duo of Raquel Amaro / Yi Chi Ma opened with a 6-2 win against Emily Ory and Brianna Gomez. Yunuen Elizarraras / Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga followed with a 6-2 victory over Sophia Adams / Eugenia Camacho to clinch the doubles point for ETSU.

ETSU’s Laylo Bakhodirova / Alejandra Morales completed the doubles sweep with a 6-4 triumph against Nancy Bridges / Erika Barquero, in a battle of No. 1 seeds. Barquero grabbed the first point of the day for the Spartans in No. 2 singles as she triumphed 3-6, 4-0 (ret.) over Morales. Ma forged ETSU back in front 2-1 in the match with a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Ory.

Pascual provided the third point for the Bucs in the clash of No. 3 singles, posting a 6-3, 6-4 win over Adams. Amaro eventually prevailed in a three-set battle against Gomez by scores of 7-6 (7-2), 2-6, 6-3 to cinch the match for ETSU. Bridges was responsible for the second UNCG point of the afternoon, earning a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5) win over Bakhodirova in the meeting of No. 1 seeds. The match ended with Elizarraras posting a three-set win (3-6, 6-4, 4-6) over Camacho.
