GREENSBORO, N.C. – A trio of singles wins by the UNC Greensboro women’s tennis team was not enough to turn back visiting Coastal Carolina, who emerged with a 4-3 victory on Saturday afternoon at the UNCG Tennis Courts.

After Coastal Carolina (1-1) earned the point in doubles action, winning two of the three matches, the Spartans (0-2) quickly tied the match at 1-1 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory when Eugenia Camacho downed Alexa Tiefel in a clash of fifth seeds.

Viktorija Demcenkova forged the Chanticleers back into the lead with a 6-4, 6-3 win over fellow No. 1 seed Nancy Bridges. Coastal Carolina took a two-point edge when Maria Khomchenko posted a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Tayah Cross.

The decisive point in the match came in the clash of No. 2 seeds, as Coastal Carolina’s Jessica Mount earned a hard-fought match against Erika Barquero by scores of 7-6, 0-6, 6-3.

UNCG ended the match on a positive note with a series of wins by Brianna Gomez and Sophia Adams. Gomez claimed a 6-4, 6-7, 6-1 triumph against fourth-seeded Alicza Zduniak, while Adams came through with a 6-4, 6-7, 6-2 victory against Jennifer Brown in the meeting of No. 3 seeds.

Gomez finished with two wins on the afternoon as she teamed with Emily Oryin doubles action to post a 7-6 win against the tandem of Tiefel / Demcenkova. Meanwhile, Coastal Carolina grabbed the doubles point as the duos of Brown / Mount and Khomchenko / Zudniak completed 6-4 and 6-3 wins, respectively.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday, Feb. 9, when they host UNC Asheville for a 1 p.m. match at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
