Women's Tennis Wraps up Play from Day One of the Elon Fall Invitational
ELON, N.C. – UNCG women’s tennis began the 2017-18 season this afternoon at the Elon Fall Invitational. The eight Spartans on the roster took part in the tournament, competing in four different singles brackets and pairing together for four separate doubles brackets.
In the Maroon bracket, Alice Taylor (Cambridge, Great Britain/UMBC) suffered a three-set loss to Sabrina Barisano of UNCW (6-3, 1-6, 6-3). Taylor will face Marija Venta of Longwood tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. Nancy Bridges (Shelby, N.C./Shelby) dropped a matchup with Alory Periera of ETSU, 6-2, 6-1. She’ll take on Emory’s Bridget Harding at 11:30 tomorrow morning.
Sophia Adams (Miami, Fla./TERRA Environmental Institute) and Blaine Boaz (Dunwoody, Ga./Saint Pius X) are competing in the Gold bracket. Adams earned a 7-6 (5), 6-4 victory over ETSU’s Melissa Esguerra and will battle Xandra Fougner of UNCW tomorrow morning at 10. Boaz dropped her matchup with Elon’s Alex Koniaev, 6-1, 6-4 and will play at noon tomorrow against Appalachian State’s Becca Morse.
Emily Ory (Lafayette, La./Louisiana Connections Academy) suffered a three-set loss (6-1, 3-6, 6-2) to Natalie Wall of Coastal Carolina in the Powell singles bracket in her first match as a Spartan. Ory will matchup with Appalachian State’s Taylor Bygrave at noon tomorrow. Corinne Blythe (Leicestershire, Great Britain/Queenswood School) dropped a two set match to Elon’s Sofia Edo (6-2, 6-3) and will play Jamie Rogers of NC Central at 12:30 p.m.
Two new Spartans started their careers in the Phoenix bracket. Tayah Cross (Queensland, Australia/Matthew Flinders Anglican College) came from behind to defeat Appalachian State’s Marissa Anthony in three sets (2-6, 6-2, 6-4) and advances to face Thai Thompson of UNCW at 11 a.m. tomorrow. Brianna Gomez (Miami, Fla./John A. Ferguson) registered her first Spartan victory by taking care of NC Central’s Maru Berghaus in straight sets (6-2, 6-3), earning the right to face Coastal Carolina’s Brooke Campbell at 11:15 a.m.
In Maroon doubles, Bridges and Boaz teamed to defeat a mixed pair from UNCW and Appalachian State, 8-2. The Spartans will matchup with Madara Straume and Thompson of UNCW tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
Gold doubles saw new Spartans Taylor and Ory partner up. The two dropped an 8-4 decision to Rylie Cox and Iryna Vaardanian of Coastal Carolina. Taylor and Ory are back tomorrow at 9 a.m. against Emory’s pair of Emma Perleman and Stephanie Taylor.
Adams and Blythe received a bye in the Powell doubles bracket and will take on UNCW’s Fougner and Sarah Horn at 9 a.m. tomorrow.
The Phoenix doubles saw Cross and Gomez play competitively against NC Central’s Polina Skharova and Jamie Rodgers, falling 8-6. Cross and Gomez and back in action Sunday as they will receive a bye in the second round of the Phoenix bracket.
