Women's Tennis Opens 2017-18 at Elon Fall Invitational This Weekend
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG women’s tennis heads to Elon this weekend for its first competition of the 2017-18 season this weekend. Matches start Friday morning at 11. All eight Spartans will be playing in the event, which features four singles and four doubles brackets.
In the Maroon bracket, Alice Taylor (Cambridge, Great Britain/UMBC) takes on Sabrina Barisano of UNCW at noon. Nancy Bridges (Shelby, N.C./Shelby) matches up against Alory Periera of ETSU at 1:15. The Gold bracket features Sophia Adams (Miami, Fla./TERRA Environmental Institute) taking on Melissa Esguerra of ETSU at noon. Blaine Boaz (Dunwoody, Ga./Saint Pius X) joins Adams in the Gold bracket, and faces against Alex Koniaev of Elon at 1:30 Friday afternoon.
Emily Ory (Lafayette, La./Louisiana Connections Academy) and Corinne Blythe (Leicestershire, Great Britain/Queenswood School) will participate in the Powell bracket. Ory makes her Spartan debut against Coastal Carolina’s Natalie Wall at 1:30 p.m. Blythe is pitted against Sofia Edo of Elon at 1:45.
The Phoenix bracket features a pair of new Spartans. Tayah Cross (Queensland, Australia/Matthew Flinders Anglican College) faces Marissa Anthony of Appalachian State at 2:30 p.m. and Brianna Gomez (Miami, Fla./John A. Ferguson) battles NC Central’s Maru Berghaus at 3 p.m.
In the doubles competition, Boaz and Bridges team up to take on Kirsten Moore and Maria Praja of Elon at noon Friday in the Maroon bracket. The Gold doubles bracket features Taylor and Ory teaming up to take on Rylie Cox and Iryna Vardanian of Coastal Carolina at 11 a.m.. Cross and Gomez team against NC Central’s Polina Skharova and Jamie Rogers in the Phoenix doubles at 11 a.m. Adams and Blythe received a first round bye and will compete at 9 a.m. Saturday morning.
