GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore Tayah Cross earned a 6-1, 6-3 victory in a clash over sixth spot Madeline Finley to help the UNC Greensboro women’s tennis team earn a clinch match victory, 4-0, over visiting UNC Asheville on Saturday afternoon at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.

The Spartans (1-2), which picked up their first win of the season, halted a three-match winning streak by the Bulldogs.

“The girls came out strong,” said head coach Ale Guerra. “They were ready to get their first win and they were fired up. I am proud of their energy and competitiveness throughout the match today.”

UNCG picked up the first win of the match in doubles action when the tandem of Cross and Sophia Adams emerged with a 6-2 victory over Finley and Anastasia Horvat. The Bulldogs (4-2) responded with a 6-3 win, by virtue of Christin Louw and Emily Sidor’s victory over the tandem of Emily Ory and Eugenia Camacho. In the battle of No. 1 doubles, the Spartans’ Nancy Bridges and Brianna Gomez took down Lize Alet Morkel and Taylor Love by a 6-1 margin to establish a 1-0 UNCG lead in the match.

Gomez followed the doubles win by downing Shipley in singles play, winning the first set 7-6 before the Bulldog senior was forced to retire from the game. Ory put the Spartans within one point of the match victory when she completed a 6-1, 6-3 sweep against Horvat, setting the stage for Cross’ dramatic win.

UNC Greensboro returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 16, when it hosts Appalachian State at 1 p.m.
