GREENSBORO, N.C. – Freshman Brianna Gomez earned her first career Player of the Week award for her efforts during the last week of the regular season. Gomez finished the week 2-0 to improve her overall record to 15-3 and 5-1 in Southern Conference play.
The Spartans played three matches last week, falling at Wofford and Davidson before ending the regular season on a high note with a 4-3 victory over Chattanooga. Gomez played at the fourth flight in all three matches. Against Wofford, she earned a decisive 6-3, 6-3 win over Curran Carver. Her match against Davidson went unfinished as Davidson had earned the four points needed to take the match. After falling in the first set to Chattanooga’s Tamri Chalaganidze, she rallied to earn the 4-6, 6-0, 7-6 (7-5) win and clinch the match-deciding point. The win over Chattanooga was UNCG’s first SoCon win this season and snapped a losing streak of 14-straight matches.
UNCG women’s tennis is back in action at the Southern Conference Tournament this weekend at Chattanooga. The Spartans will take on the No. 1 seeded Furman Paladins at 1 p.m.
