Women's Tennis Begins the 2018 Season at Home Friday Afternoon
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG women’s tennis is set to begin the 2018 spring season tomorrow afternoon as it hosts the Charlotte 49ers at 2:15 p.m. at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center. The Spartans return five letterwinners from last season’s team and feature three newcomers.
Three seniors will lead the Spartans this season. Corinne Blythe (Leicestershire, Great Britain) and Blaine Boaz (Dunwoody, Ga./Saint Pius X) are a pair of three-year letterwinners. Blythe earned nine wins in doubles competitions last season and this spring, she earned three wins over opponents from NC Central and Campbell. Blythe was named Academic All-Southern Conference, earned a spot on the SoCon honor roll and notched the SoCon Commissioner’s Medal after maintaining a GPA over 3.8.
Boaz picked up four wins in singles play last season, including two in SoCon play. She partnered with Nancy Bridges (Shelby, N.C./Shelby) to go 9-9, with eight wins at No. 2 doubles. This fall, she won a pair of matches, earning wins over opponents from Appalachian State and Presbyterian.
Alice Taylor (Cambridge, Great Britain/UMBC) is another senior that transferred in from UMBC. She played in six matches during the fall, earning a win over an opponent from Presbyterian. She played competitively during the fall, falling in three sets three times. She partnered with Blythe in five matches, earning three wins. She also teamed up with Emily Ory (Lafayette, La./Louisiana Connections Academy) for three matches, defeating teams from Emory and ETSU.
Bridges is the lone junior on this season’s squad. During the fall, Bridges went 3-0 at the Spartan Classic, earning wins over opponents from Appalachian State, Presbyterian and Campbell. She partnered with Boaz for 10 doubles matches, earning wins over pairs from UNCW, Coastal Carolina and Campbell. She was a member of the 2016 Southern Conference honor roll.
The team’s lone sophomore is coming off of a season that saw her earn Freshman All-Southern Conference honors. Sophia Adams (Miami, Fla./TERRA Environmental Institute) opened the fall season with wins over opponents from ETSU and Appalachian State in straight sets. She added two more wins over opponents from UNCW and Campbell at the Coastal Carolina Battle at the Beach. Last season, she earned a 5-4 record at No. 4 singles and went 5-2 in SoCon play.
Three freshmen round out this year’s roster. Tayah Cross (Queensland, Australia/Matthew Flinders Anglican College), Brianna Gomez (Miami, Fla./John A. Ferguson) and Emily Ory (Lafayette, La./Louisiana Connections Academy) will compete in their first spring season. Cross competed in eight matches during the fall and earned wins over two opponents from Appalachian State. In doubles play, she and Gomez defeated teams from Presbyterian and Campbell during the Spartan Classic.
Gomez went 7-3 in singles action during the fall season. She started the season with six consecutive wins at the Elon Fall Invitational and the Spartan Classic Invitational, earning wins over opponents from NC Central, Elon and Coastal Carolina. She paired with Cross for two doubles victories during the fall season.
Ory earned three singles wins in her first fall season, earning wins over opponents from NC Central, Presbyterian and Coastal Carolina. She competed in doubles with Taylor in her first doubles competition, earning wins over teams from Emory and ETSU. She also teamed up with Blythe for a win over a pair from UNCW and Adams for wins over teams from Presbyterian and Appalachian State.
