Eight Student-Athletes Earn Spartan Elite Strength Awards 05-12-2017

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Eight different UNCG student-athletes were honored this year with the Spartan Elite Strength Award from seven different teams for the 2016-17 season. The Spartan Elite Award is designed to recognize our student-athletes who reach their maximum potential in the strength and conditioning realm.

Earning the award in the fall includes Emily Lopez (Charlotte, N.C./Olympic) from softball, Connor Thompson (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents) from men's tennis, Corinne Blythe (Leicestershire, Great Britain/Queenswood School) from women's tennis and Zach Kuchmaner (Charlotte, N.C./Marvin Ridge) from baseball. In the spring, Regan Lehman (Wilmington, Del./Padua Academy) and Gabbi Charles (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) of women's soccer, Ashley Muench (Hurdle Mills, N.C./Orange) of volleyball and Matt Mattis (Little Stoke, England) of men's soccer earn the honors.

“Student-athletes that earn the Spartan Elite Award are held in select group of peers in their sports the nation,” head strength and conditioning coach Danny Wheel said. “This is an award that is not easy to reach and is a testament to the hard work of this year's eight deserving student-athletes.”

Student-athletes earn this award by accumulating points based on performance testing. Each Team at UNCG has a different point scale based upon the all-time record, team average and other peer institution records for those sports. This award is designed to challenge UNCG student-athletes and less than five percent of student-athletes per year are expected to earn the award.
