ELON, N.C. – UNCG Women’s Tennis competed in its first action of the 2016-17 season this weekend, with seven players playing in the Elon Fall Invitational.  The Spartans combined to go 10-8 in four singles brackets, and 3-7 in the four doubles brackets.

Sarah Swiderski (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) and Alice Taylor (Cambridge, Great Britain/UMBC) competed in the Maroon singles bracket.  Swiderski dropped her two matches, while Taylor defeated Taylor Bygrave of Appalachian State before falling to Erica Braschi of Elon.  Swiderski and Taylor were partnered in the Maroon doubles bracket.  There, the pair dropped their first match, before defeating Appalachian State’s pair of Bygrave and Rebecca Morse.

Yasmin Franco (Largo, Fla./Indian Rocks Christian) was the lone UNCG representative in the Gold singles bracket.  Franco defeated Appalachian State’s Megan Mullen before falling to Elon’s Natalia Janowicz.  Sophia Adams (Miami, Fla./TERRA Environmental Institute) won her first two matches as part of the Powell singles bracket, knocking off Alex Koniaev of Elon, and Meili Martin of Radford.  The pair worked together in the Gold doubles bracket, but dropped their three matches together.

Nancy Bridges (Shelby, N.C./Shelby) also competed in the Powell singles bracket.  Bridges defeated NC Central’s Lynsey Cover, 6-0, 6-0, before falling to Elon’s Maria Paraja.  Corinne Blythe (Leicestershire, Great Britain/Queenswood School) worked in the Phoenix singles bracket.  Blythe dropped her first match to Lyndell Griffenig of Richmond before scoring back-to-back wins over Lauren Mullis of NC Central (6-0, 6-0) and Emory’s Emma Perelman (6-1, 6-0).  Blythe and Bridges combined in the Powell doubles bracket, earning a second place finish.  After defeating Elon’s Janowicz and Paraja 8-6, the pair knocked off Radford’s Martin and Camilla Littlewoord, 8-6.

Blaine Boaz (Dunwoody, Ga./Saint Pius X) competed in the Phoenix singles bracket.  After falling to Devin Knors of Appalachian State, Boaz defeated Michelle Demeo of Emory, 7-6, 6-0 and then took down Radford’s Lilly Ellick, 6-0, 6-0.  Boaz was scheduled to play her teammate, Blythe, before the match was cancelled.  Blythe competed in a different match Sunday, defeating Appalachian State’s Morse.  Boaz was part of a split doubles team, partnering up with Ellick of Radford.  After a first round bye, the pair dropped a match to Emory’s Perelman and Demeo.  The pair then fell Winthrop’s Peggy Rooke and Arianna Pepper and took fourth place in the bracket.
