FRESHMAN (2019): Capped off a 10-win freshman season by being named to the All-Freshman SoCon team and as First-Team All-SoCon doubles alongside partner Nancy Bridges … one of three players with 10 singles wins on the season, along with Bridges and Sophia Adams … won six singles matches as the No. 3 seed for the Spartans and four as the No. 2 seed … closed out doubles play with nine victories, eight of which came alongside Bridges as the No. 1 seed … won her first collegiate match against Renata Ruiz (N.C. A&T) on Feb. 28 by scores of 6-1, 6-0 … got her trip to Colorado off to a solid start with a 6-3, 6-3 win against Northern Colorado’s Sandra Keta … came through with her first SoCon victory at Furman (March 13) when she took down No. 3 seed Julia Adams (6-3, 6-4) … had her first two-match winning streak of the season three days later by downing Lilie Steryous (Wofford) by a 6-3, 6-1 margin … rebounded from a setback at Mercer to win back-to-back three-set matches against Gabrielle Centenari (Davidson) and Daniela Voloh (James Madison) … closed out March with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Elsa Pool (Samford) … ended her season on a three-match winning streak, the longest streak of the slate … began the streak with a 6-3, 7-6 victory over Polina Goloputova (Chattanooga) on April 6 … claimed a 6-3, 6-4 win over Alejandra Morales (ETSU) in the regular season finale … responsible for UNCG’s lone point in the SoCon Tournament clash with Samford as she took down Pool by scores of 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 … came through with her first doubles victory on Feb. 28 as she and Emily Ory defeated Renata Ruiz / Marlene Estenssoro (N.C. A&T) by a 6-0 margin … teamed with Bridges to take down Anna Battersby / Raffa Mora (Northern Colorado) by a 6-3 score … earned her first SoCon doubles win as she and Bridges defeated Katie Sidor / Celine Schepers (Mercer) by a 6-2 margin … followed that with a 7-6 (6-4) win over Megan Scholvinck / Elizabeth Truluck (Davidson) … completed the season by winning five of the last six doubles matches alongside Bridges … the first of those wins came against Jordan Strickland / Savannah Taranto (Western Carolina) by a 5-3 margin … two days later, on March 30, Bridges and Barquero downed Holly Horsfall / Elsa Pool (Samford) with a 6-3 win … defeated Maria Paraja / Alex Koniaev (Elon) to open up April play by a 6-3 margin … claimed a 6-3 win over the tandem of Delaney Edwards / Emma Van Hee (Chattanooga) … ended the SoCon Tournament with a 6-2 doubles win over the pairing of Horsfall / Pool.
PRIOR TO UNCG: Barquero earned six varsity letters, playing on varsity since she was in seventh grade ... lead the Knights to back-to-back PRHSAA state championships in 2013 and 2014 as well as a PRHSAA runner-up finish in 2016 and 2017 and was a four-time team captain ... competed for the Advanced Tennis Academy under coach Juan Carlos Fernandez ... was named to the 2017 USTA Junior Leadership Team, as well as winning the 2017 doubles and mixed doubles Championship in Puerto Rico’s National Championship ... also in 2017, she was the girls 18 USTA sectional champion in singles and doubles play and was a finalist in the 2016 Copa Palma Del Caribe, played at Humacao, Puerto Rico ... finished third in the 2016 junior Fed Cup North/Central American & Caribbean Final qualifying in Boca Raton, Fla. ... earned the 2016 sportsmanship award at Puerto Rico’s nation championship and was a finalist at the 2015 doubles at the Fed Cup Central America & Caribbean Pre-Qualifying at El Salvador before winning the doubles titles at the ITF junior events in El Salvador.
PERSONAL: Barquero is the daughter of Jose Barquero and Brenda Sotomayor and has two older sisters, Paulina and Valeria. She plans to major in kinesiology.
