GREENSBORO, N.C. - Opening its fall season at home, UNCG men's tennis collected 17 wins between singles and doubles matches over the weekend in the UNCG Fall Invitational. Newcomer Alex Zuckerman went undefeated over his four singles matches in Greensboro, while the top doubles pairing of Ollie Palmer and Nico Grewe took all three of their matches as well.
Starting off their singles competition against Radford on Friday, the Spartans took five of their eight matchups against the Highlanders, led by a straight sets victory from top seeded Ollie Palmer. Hugh Knapp and Roger Rogowski both defeated their opponents in two sets, while Cooper Wyett and Zuckerman surrendered just three and two games respectively in their match wins.
Wrapping up with doubles play against East Carolina, Palmer and Grewe kicked off their perfect weekend with a 7-6 victory over the Pirates' top pairing, while Rogowski and Zuckerman did the same in the second seed. Logan Blaser and Wyett combined for a 6-4 win in the fourth pairing, helping the Spartans to a 3-1 win over the Pirates in doubles play.
ECU would get the better of the Spartans in Saturday singles however, with Rogowski and Zuckerman claiming their team's lone wins, dropping their opposition 6-2, 6-2 and 6-3, 6-3 respectively. UNCG wrapped up day two of the fall tournament against James Madison, with Zuckerman defeating the Dukes' sixth seed 7-5 and 6-0 in singles and Grewe and Palmer combining for a 6-4 victory over JMU's top pairing.
Playing just three doubles matches on Sunday, the Spartans capped off the weekend with a pair of wins over USC Upstate. Grewe and Palmer completed their three-win weekend with a 6-0 blanking of Upstate's top seed, while Jack Burkill and Eric Whisnant won their own doubles matchup at 6-1.
UNCG's final three victories of the tournament came in singles play against Campbell, as Zuckerman completed his 4-0 weekend. Rogowski and Palmer each took home wins over the Camels as well, as the Spartans finished with a total of 17 match wins on the afternoon.
COMING UP NEXT
The Spartans will take a week off before competing at ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., with pre-qualifying scheduled for October 5-6th.
