Men's Tennis Completes Day Two Of Elon Fall Invitational

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s tennis team wrapped up day two of the Elon Fall Invitational Saturday. Seven different Spartans played singles Saturday and three different doubles groups played as well. Daniel Hammarstedt (Stockholm, Sweden/Ava Gymnasium), Ian Melnik (Lawrenceville, Ga./Rivers Academy) and Eric Whisnant (Greensboro, N.C./Western Guilford) all posted 2-0 records on the day and will still play singles matches Sunday.

SINGLES

In the Maroon Singles, Marcus Vidgren (Stockholm, Sweden/Stockholm Idrotts Gymnasium) went 1-1 on the day. Vidgren opened with a 4-6, 2-6 loss to Simon Baudry of Clemson before coming back with a 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 win over Felix Ewers of USC-Upstate in the consolation bracket.

The Spartans had two players in the Gold Singles in Hammarstedt and Ollie Palmer (Twyning, Great Britain/Saint Peter’s). Hammarstedt posted a 2-0 record on the day and will play Alvaro Arce of James Madison Sunday at 10:30 a.m. Hammarstedt posted a 7-5, 7-6 win over Gabriel Dias of Winthrop and a 7-5, 6-4win over Ignaciao Garrido of USC Upstate. Palmer opened Saturday with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Kyle Frankel of Elon before dropping his second match by a 6-7, 3-6 margin to Beau Pelletier of Clemson.

In the Phoenix Singles, Nico Grewe (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) went 1-1 on the day to finish his singles play. Grewe opened with a 5-7, 2-6 loss to Paul Boulay of Coastal Carolina before coming back with a 6-4, 3-6, 10-3 victory over Nicolas Ardish of N.C. A&T.

Melnik led the way for the Spartans in the Powell Singles, posting a 2-0 record and will play Sunday at 10:30 a.m. against Tate Steinhour of James Madison. Melnik posted a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Henry Cohen of Coastal Carolina and a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Red Rabideau of Clemson. Logan Blaser (Gainesville, Fla./Oak Hill) dropped two matches in the Powell Singles with an 0-6, 6-7 loss to Steinhour and a 6-7, 5-7 loss to Ed Colcough of UNC Asheville.

Rounding out the singles in the White flight was Whisnant who posted a 2-0 record and will play Sunday at 10:30 a.m. against Austin Allen of East Carolina. Whisnant posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Bret Caban of N.C. A&T and a 6-4, 6-0 win over Pablo Torres of North Carolina Central.

DOUBLES

The Spartans dropped a pair of doubles matches Saturday and advanced one match by default in the Maroon Doubles flight. Vidgren and Grew advanced and will play Sunday against Green/Singerman of Furman at 9:45 a.m.

Jack Burkill (London, Great Britain) teamed with Palmer in the Gold Doubles. The team fell by an 3-8 margin to Lanthiez and Mendoza of James Madison and will play Sunday at 9:45 a.m. against the duo of Thomas and Angraddi from Charlotte.

Melnik and Whisnant battled hard in the Powell Doubles before falling 6-8 to Daly and Colcough from UNC Asheville. They will play Sunday at 9 a.m. against Cohen and Castellanos of Coastal Carolina. Hammarstedt and Blaser will play Sunday at 9 a.m. against Caban/Lawrence from N.C. A&T.
