Men's Tennis Kicks off 2017-18 at the Elon Fall Invitational 09-21-2017

GREENSBORO, N.C. – As Connor Thompson (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents) gets his senior campaign started at the Oracle ITA Masters in Malibu, California, the rest of the Spartan men’s tennis team gets its season started a little closer to home. UNCG men’s tennis will participate in the Elon Fall Invitational this weekend with action getting started tomorrow morning.

Eight Spartans will get their season started Friday afternoon. The Elon Fall Invitational consists of five singles brackets, and five doubles brackets.

Marcus Vidgren (Stockholm, Sweden/Stockholm Idrotts Gymnasium) gets his season started in the Maroon singles bracket. Vidgren will take on Elon’s Salvadore Mijares at 1:30 tomorrow afternoon.

Two Spartans will compete in the Gold singles bracket. Daniel Hammarstedt (Stockholm, Sweden/Ava Gymnasium) gets his season started against Jake Munns of Furman at 10:30 a.m. Ollie Palmer (Twyning, Great Britain/St. Peter’s) gets his Spartan career started, as he’ll take on James Madison’s Alvaro Arce at 11 a.m.

Nico Grewe (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) and Jack Burkill (London, Great Britain/Millfield School) will be competing in the Phoenix singles bracket. Grewe starts his Spartan career against UNC Asheville’s Andrew Sinai at 9:30 a.m. Burkill will battle with Coastal Carolina’s Zak Talic at the same time.

Powell singles features Ian Melnik (Lawrenceville, Ga./Rivers Academy) and Logan Blaser (Gainesville, Fla./Oak Hill). Melnik starts his season at 9:30 a.m. against Elon’s Neal Port, while Blaster will face off with Coastal Carolina’s Juan Castellanos at 11 a.m.

Redshirt Freshman Eric Whisnant (Greensboro, N.C./Western Guilford) will begin his career in the White bracket Saturday morning. Whisnant will tango with North Carolina A&T’s Brett Caban at 9 a.m. Saturday, as both players received a bye on Friday.

Doubles action gets started Friday afternoon. Hammarstedt and Blaser will matchup with Winthrop’s Ryan Jaede and Rhys Jones to get the doubles action started at 2 p.m. Melnik and Whisnant are set to battle Josh Raymundo and Tate Steinour of James Madison at 2:30 tomorrow afternoon.

Palmer and Burkill team up to take on Olli Nolan and Olly Cull of UNC Ashville Friday afternoon at 3:30 in the Gold bracket. The pair of Vidgren and Grewe takes on Coastal Carolina’s Lawrence Perrin and Luiz Fjaria at 4 p.m. in the Maroon doubles.
