GREENSBORO, N.C. – The 2017 Southern Conference men’s tennis Player of the Year Connor Thompson (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents) is set to begin his fall competition at the Oracle Masters in Malibu, California. The Oracle Masters invites the returning conference Player of the Year from each Division I athletic conference, with one additional wild card spot to participate in the tournament.
Thompson and the other conference Players of the Year will participate in a double elimination, 32-player men’s singles draw, 32-player women’s singles draw and a 32-team mixed doubles draw. Each mixed doubles team will be composed of the men’s player and the women’s player from each conference, with wild card players paired together or with conference players without a counterpart.
In the 2017 spring season, Thompson finished 16-4 and was 6-1 in Southern Conference play. During the regular season, Thompson defeated No. 69 David Biosca of ETSU, as well as SoCon competitors from Chattanooga, Mercer, The Citadel, Samford and Wofford. During the middle of the season, the senior won nine-straight matches, with just two that went to the third set. He finished the season winning three of his last four matches. Thompson is familiar with at least one of the other competitors next weekend, having taken on Filipe Sarrasague in a match that went unfinished last April.
The Oracle ITA Masters gets underway Thursday, Sept. 21-24 at the Malibu Racquet Club and Pepperdine University in Malibu.
