CARY, N.C. - UNCG men's tennis matched up with some of the top talent in the country this weekend, with Nico Grewe, Ollie Palmer, Roger Rogowski and Hugh Knapp all competing in the ITA Carolina Regional Championship. While Rogowski reached as far as round three of singles play, Knapp competed all the way into day three of the five day competition, winning four singles matches in the consolation bracket.
With singles play getting underway on day one, Rogowski recorded a pair of back-to-back victories over Cheso Cori of Coastal Carolina (6-1, 7-5) and Charlotte's Leo Menezes (6-4, 7-5). The sophomore's run through the winner's bracket would come to an end in round three however, falling to the No. 3 seed in the entire regional singles tournament, Josh Peck of North Carolina.
After losing their first singles matches, Grewe, Palmer and Knapp would all have to wait until Saturday to continue their singles performances, with the latter pair both registering wins in the consolation bracket. Palmer would cede his first set against NC State's Collin Shick 7-6 before coming back with back-to-back 6-2 and 6-4 victories. His weekend ended in the round of 32 however, while Knapp delivered straight set wins against Presbyterian's Teodor Cariov (6-1, 6-4) and Zak Talic of Coastal Carolina (6-4, 6-4) to advance to day three.
The sophomore from Greensboro combined with Rogowski to down top-16 seed Edu Guell and Samuel Rubell of Duke over in doubles play, 8-6. The pairing fell to East Carolina's Simon Labbe and Agustin Tamagnone in the next round however, by a final of 8-4.
Knapp would be the lone Spartan participating on day three of competition, defeating Mike Agee of Clemson in straight sets (7-5, 6-3), before tallying a victory over Thomas Brown of South Carolina (7-5, 2-6, 10-7). The sophomore was one of four athletes still standing at the end of the weekend's consolation bracket, going 4-1 in his five singles matches overall.
