GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG sophomore standout Nico Grewe picked up his team-best 10th singles win of the season on Thursday, April 11th, with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Elon’s Mario Paccini. Grewe’s win in No. 2 singles action accounted for the lone Spartan point in a 6-1 setback to Elon.
The Spartans opened the match with a 6-4 win by the duo of Roger Rogowski / Cooper Wyett, who downed Dino Bonetta / Taylor Foote in No. 3 doubles. Elon bounced back with a 6-4 victory by Camilo Ponce / Kyle Frankel, who edged Hugh Knapp and Jack Burkill.
The Phoenix (17-4) secured the doubles point and 1-0 lead in the match when the tandem of Felipe Sarrasague / Mario Paccini posted a 7-6 win over Grewe / Ollie Palmer.
Foote snagged his first victory of the day in No. 6 singles with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Ian Melnik. The Phoenix stretched their lead to 3-0 in the match after Ponce came through with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Burkill.
After Grewe came through with the first point of the day for the Spartans, Elon secured the match when Sarrasague claimed a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Palmer in the clash of No. 1 singles.
Elon stretched the lead to 5-1 after Frankel earned a hard-fought three-set win over Rogowski by scores of 7-5 (7-5), 3-6, 1-0 (10-4) in No. 4 singles. The final Phoenix point came from a 6-4, 7-6 (11-9) victory by Felipe Osses-Konig, who downed Knapp in the meeting of No. 3 singles.
The Spartans close out the 2019 regular season when they host Chattanooga on Saturday, April 13th. The match, which marks the final home match for Spartan senior Ian Melnik, begins at 12 p.m.
