SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Senior Connor Thompson earned his sixth-career Southern Conference Player of the Week award for his efforts last week. He won the award once in his sophomore season, twice last season and this is his third weekly award this season. Thompson finished 6-0 in three matches, going undefeated at No. 1 singles and partnering with Nico Grewe at No. 1 doubles. The Spartans finished the week 2-1 and swept the final match of the week against The Citadel.
Thompson started the week off by knocking off his second ranked opponent of the season. Thompson handed No. 112 ranked Sam Philp of Mercer a 6-2, 6-3 loss before defeating Philp and Olivier Stuart, 6-3 in doubles competition. He followed that victory by grinding out a 7-6, 2-6, 6-3 win over Zak Talic of Coastal Carolina. He and Grewe teamed to dominate the pair of Luiz Erla and Paul Boulay, 6-1. He finished the week with a dominating performance at The Citadel, defeating Matthew Henson, 6-0, 6-2. Doubles play saw a similar trend with a 6-2 win over Noah Nawabi and Gavin Stewart, 6-2.
Thompson and Grewe have won their last four doubles matches, earning a 5-1 record as a pair. Thompson has a 14-3 record and has now won 11-consecutive matches.
Thompson and the Spartans are back on the court this afternoon as they take on the Wofford Terriers at 2 p.m. in Spartanburg.
