WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – UNCG’s men’s tennis team was back in action at the Wake Forest Fall Invitational Saturday afternoon. Four competitors were scheduled to play, but injuries forced two to withdraw from the competition.
Marcus Vidgren (Stockholm, Sweden/Stockholm Idrotts Gymnasium) couldn’t right his ship after falling in his first two matches yesterday, as he dropped his match to Wake Forest’s Yuval Soloman before retiring with an injury.
Ollie Palmer (Twyning, Great Britain/St. Peter’s) played tough but dropped a 7-6 (7), 4-6, 7-6 (4) matchup with UNC Asheville’s Oli Nolan. Palmer will take on Axel Fries of Davidson tomorrow in the B1 singles bracket.
Ian Melnik (Lawrenceville, Ga./Rivers Academy) took care of UNC Asheville’s Andrew Sinai, 6-4, 6-2 and will face Charlotte’s Collin Thomson in the championship match of the C3 bracket, tomorrow.
Vidgren and Melnik dropped their matchup with Indiana’s Bennett Crane and Antonio Cembellin, 6-3 before the Vidgren injury forced the Spartans to withdraw from the third place match. An injury also forced Palmer and Connor Thompson (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents) to withdraw from their matchup with a Wofford pair.
Palmer and Melnik will play again tomorrow on the final day of the Wake Forest Fall Invitational.
