Thompson Dominates Singles Play at the 49ers Fall Invitational

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Reigning SoCon Player of the Year Connor Thompson (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents) took care of business this weekend at the 49ers Fall Invitational. The Spartan senior finished a perfect 4-0 mark and added a doubles victory in the competition. Overall, ten Spartans competed in singles action with five doubles pairs.

In doubles play Saturday, Ian Melnik (Lawrenceville, Ga./Rivers Academy) and Jack Burkill (London, Great Britain/Millfield School) fell to a duo from the host school before notching a 6-4 victory over a pair from Davidson. The Spartans dropped a 6-2 matchup with North Carolina’s Ladd Harrison and Blaine Boyden in the A1 consolation finals.

Thompson and Ollie Palmer (Twyning, Great Britain/St. Peter’s) lost their first two matches to pairs from Vanderbilt and Tennessee before rebounding to defeat Winthrop’s Aditya Gokhale and Joshua Ryan, 6-3 in the A2 doubles bracket.

In B1 doubles, Eric Whisnant (Greensboro, N.C./Western Guilford) and Logan Blaser (Gainesville, Fla./Oak Hill) dropped all three of their matches to teams from North Carolina A&T, Richmond and Wofford. In the final matchup against the Wofford duo, the Spartans played tough, but fell 7-5.

B1 doubles also saw Logan Walker (Stuart, Fla./Morningside Academy) and Daniel Hammarstedt (Stockholm, Sweden/Ava Gymnasium) start the weekend defeating Wofford’s Kyle Barr and Edu Villar, 6-3. UNCG dropped a matchup with Winthrop before defeating North Carolina A&T’s Nicolas Arduh and Adair Bartra, 6-4 for third place.

B2 doubles saw Nico Grewe (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) team with Marcus Vidgren (Stockholm, Sweden/Stockholm Idrotts Gymnasium). The Spartans defeated a Vanderbilt pair, 6-4 before falling to a Davidson duo by the same score. The Spartans rallied to take third place in the bracket, defeating Wofford’s Peter Coombs and Diego Losada, 7-6 (5).

Singles action saw Thompson take the A1 singles bracket. The Spartan senior notched straight set wins over all four opponents. Thompson got the action started with a 6-2, 6-4 win over David Hager of Davidson before defeating Vanderbilt’s George Harwell (7-6 (4), 6-4), and Gardner-Webb’s Millen Hurrion (6-3, 6-1). He claimed the bracket after defeating North Carolina’s Simon Sondergaard, 6-0, 6-2.

Also in the A1 bracket, Palmer dropped his matchup with Sondergaard (6-1, 6-3) before falling to Vanderbilt’s Panu Virtanen (6-4, 6-0). In the consolation bracket, Palmer dropped his next matchup with Charlotte’s Sam Rice (6-2, 7-6 (5)). He did notch a victory over Scotty Cameron of Charlotte, 6-2, 6-4 in his final match.

After dropping his first two matches in the A2 singles bracket, Vidgren rallied to win back-to-back matches. The Spartan dropped matches to Gardner-Webb’s Max Scholl (6-1, 6-4) and Tennessee’s Andrew Rogers (6-3, 6-2) before defeating Vanderbilt’s Alex Ross (6-1, 6-3) and Richmond’s Klein Evans in three sets. (4-6, 6-4, 6-1).

B1 singles featured three Spartans in the bracket. Grewe dropped his first two matches to Wofford’s Parks Schoen (6-3, 6-2) and North Carolina A&T’s Jorge Bartra (6-3, 6-3). Grewe rebounded to earn wins over Charlotte’s Noah Milliken (6-4, 6-1) and a three-set win over fellow 49er, Collin Thomson (4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3). Walker dropped three matches to Stefano Puga of Gardner-Webb (6-3, 6-4), Wofford’s Coombs (6-2, 6-1) Charlotte’s Thomson (6-1, 6-4) before defeating Milliken, 7-5, 6-1.

Melnik played well in the B1 bracket. After falling to Wofford’s John Crawford in three sets (7-6 (5), 6-7, 6-4), Melnik defeated Thomson (6-4, 2-6, 6-4) and Coombs (2-6, 6-0, 6-1) before notching a three-set win over Jorge Bartra.

Burkill dropped his first match to Davidson’s Tommy Mason (6-2, 3-6, 6-2) before retiring. Hammarstedt overcame a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Wofford’s Omar Williams to defeat Anthony Brennan of Gardner-Webb (6-3, 6-3), Wofford’s Losada (6-4, 6-3) and Chousa (6-2, 6-1) to earn the consolation title in B2 singles.

After falling in his first two matches in the C1 singles bracket, Blaser came back to defeat North Carolina A&T’s Brett Caban in a tough, 3-6, 6-4, 10-4 matchup. Whisnant won his first match of the weekend over Caban, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 before falling to fellow Aggies Jordan Lawrence and Jorge Goenaga Gonzales, 6-3, 6-4.

Men’s tennis will wrap up the fall season next weekend at the Wake Forest Fall Invitational.
