CHARLOTTE N.C. – UNCG men’s tennis returned to the court Friday in Charlotte as the Spartans took part in the 49ers’ Fall Invitational hosted by Charlotte. Ten singles and five doubles pairs took the court on day one of the Invitational. Action gets started up again tomorrow morning with doubles play beginning at 9 a.m.
Doubles play started the day. Ian Melnik (Lawrenceville, Ga./Rivers Academy) teamed with Jack Burkill (London, Great Britain/Millfield School) and fell to a pair from Charlotte before defeating Davidson’s Artem Khrapko and Matthew Rose, 6-4. The Spartans will take on North Carolina’s Ladd Harrison and Blaine Boyden in the consolation final.
Connor Thompson (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents) and Ollie Palmer (Twyning, Great Britain/St. Peter’s) teamed up and fell in two matches to pairs from Vanderbilt and Tennessee. Thompson and Palmer will take on Winthrop’s Aditya Gokhale and Joshua Ryan tomorrow at 9 a.m.
Logan Walker (Stuart, Fla./Morningside Academy) and Daniel Hammarstedt (Stockholm, Sweden/Ava Gymnasium) won their first match of the day over a pair from Wofford before falling to a Winthrop team. The Spartans are back in action for the third place match of their bracket against North Carolina A&T’s Nicholas Arduh and Adair Bartra at 9 a.m.
Eric Whisnant (Greensboro, N.C./Western Guilford) and Logan Blaser (Gainesville, Fla./Oak Hall) competed in the same bracket with Walker and Hammarstedt. Whisnant and Blaser dropped their first match to North Carolina A&T's Arduh and Bartra, 6-4 before falling to a pair from Richmond, 6-2. The two will take on a team from Wofford tomorrow morning.
Nico Grewe (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) and Marcus Vidgren (Stockholm, Sweden/Stockholm Idrotts Gymnasium) paired to defeat Vanderbilt’s Adam Sraberg and Panu Virtanen before falling to a pair from Davidson. The Spartans will compete against Wofford’s Peter Coombs and Diego Losada at 9:45 a.m. for the 3rd place match of their bracket.
Singles action featured nine Spartans in action in five different brackets. Thompson got his singles action started with a straight-set victory over Davidson’s David Hager. He will battle with Vanderbilt’s George Harwell tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. Palmer suffered a 6-1, 6-3 loss to North Carolina’s Simon Sondergaard while competing in the same bracket as Thompson. Palmer will face Vanderbilt’s Virtanen tomorrow morning.
Vidgren opened singles play with a loss to Max Scholl of Gardner-Webb, 6-1, 6-4. He will take on Tennessee’s Andrew Rogers tomorrow at 11 a.m.
Grewe, Walker and Melnik, all competing in the same bracket, suffered similar results Friday afternoon. Grewe dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to Wofford’s Parks Schoen, with Walker falling to Gardner-Webb’s Stefano Puga, 6-3, 6-4. Melnik dropped a 6-1, 6-3 matchup with Richmond’s Joseph Nardini. The three will face Jorge Bartra of North Carolina A&T, Wofford’s Coombs, and Charlotte’s Collin Thomson tomorrow at noon, respectively.
Burkill played Davidson’s Tommy Mason tough before falling in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. Burkill will face North Carolina A&T’s Arduh at 1 p.m. tomorrow. Hammarstedt dropped a 6-3, 6-4 matchup with Wofford’s Omar Williams and will matchup with Gardner-Webb’s Anthony Brennan at 1 p.m. tomorrow.
Whisnant earned a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory over North Carolina A&T's Brett Caban and will face fellow Aggie Jordan Lawrence tomorrow afternoon. Blaser wrapped up the action, falling 6-2, 6-0 to Jorge Goenage Gonzales of North Carolina A&T and will face Michael Bass of Charlotte tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
