Day One of the Elon Fall Invitational Wraps up for Men's Tennis
ELON, N.C. – UNCG men’s tennis got the 2017-18 season started at the Elon Fall Invitational, hosted by Elon University Friday afternoon. Friday’s competition features seven Spartans competing in singles play, and four pairs competing in doubles competition.
Marcus Vidgren (Stockholm, Sweden/Stockholm Idrotts Gymnasium) got the action started with a three-set victory over Elon’s Salvador Mijares, 6-4, 0-6, 6-4. Vidgren will take on Clemson’s Simon Baudry tomorrow at noon in the Maroon singles bracket.
In Gold singles, Daniel Hammarstedt (Stockholm, Sweden/Ava Gymnasium) went three sets, but was unable to pull out the victory against Furman’s Jake Munns, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0. Hammarstedt will take on Winthrop’s Gabriel Dias at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow. Ollie Palmer (Twyning, Great Britain/Saint Peter’s) got his Spartan career started on the right foot, earning a 7-6, 6-1 victory over Alvaro Arce of James Madison. Palmer will battle Elon’s Kyle Frankel at 10:30 tomorrow morning.
Nico Grewe (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) and Jack Burkill (London, Great Britain/Millfield School) are competing in the Phoenix singles bracket. Grewe dropped his first match against Andrew Sinai of UNC Ashville, 7-6, 5-7, 6-2. He will match up with Coastal Carolina’s Paul Boulay at 10:30 a.m. Burkill dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to Coastal Carolina’s Zac Talic. Burkill will take on Theophile Lanthiez of James Madison tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m.
Powell singles features the pair of Ian Melnik (Lawrenceville, Ga./Rivers Academy) and Logan Blaser (Gainesville, Fla./Oak Hill). Melnik dropped a tough three-set loss to Neal Port of Elon, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. He will do battle with Coastal Carolina’s Harry Cohen at 9 a.m. Blaser dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision to Coastal Carolina’s Juan Castellanos and will matchup with James Madison’s Tate Steinhour at 9 a.m. tomorrow morning.
Vidgren and Grewe teamed up in the Maroon doubles bracket. The pair dropped a tough 8-7 loss to Lawrence Perrin and Luiz Faria of Coastal Carolina. The Spartans won by default over a pair from Elon and will take on a team from Furman later in the competition.
Palmer and Burkill matched up with Olli Nolan and Olly Cull of UNC Asheville falling 8-5, and later falling to James Madison’s Lanthiez and Paul Mendoza.
Powell doubles featured the pair of Melnik and Whisnant taking on James Madison’s Josh Raymundo and Steinour. The Spartans dropped the match and followed that with an 8-6 loss to UNC Ashville’s Reese Daly and Ed Colclough.
Hammarstedt and Blaser dropped their matchup with Winthrop’s Ryan Jaede and Rhys Jones, 8-4 and will compete with North Carolina A&T’s Brett Caban and Jordan Lawrence later in the tournament.
