Men's Tennis Wraps up Fall Season at 49ers Fall Invitaional
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Men’s tennis wrapped up the its fall season this weekend, with seven players competing in singles, and three teams in the doubles competitions at the 49ers Fall Invitational, hosted by Charlotte.
Will Albright (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) lost to Alex Fennell of South Carolina (6-1, 6-4), before bouncing back to win two of his next three matches. Albright knocked off Francis Pare of Charlotte (6-3, 6-3) before falling to Robert Dudley of Clemson (6-3, 6-0). In his final match, Albright defeated James Massie of Asheville, 6-3, 7-5.
Connor Thompson (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents) earned his first win of the weekend over Davidson’s David Hager (6-0, 6-3), before falling to Gardner-Webb’s Max Scholl (6-3, 6-3). Thompson proceeded to win back-to-back matches over Jack Maddocks of Appalachian State (6-4, 6-2) and Harris Poric of Wofford (6-1, 6-2).
Jack Burkill (London, Great Britain/Millfield School) knocked off Jensen Martin of Charlotte, (6-7 (3), 6-1, 6-3) before falling to Asheville’s Henry Patten (6-2, 6-2). In the consolation round, Burkill fell to Poric of Wofford (6-0, 6-1).
Warren Bryan (Greensboro, N.C./Longwood) earned a berth into the consolation final in the B2 singles bracket. Bryan lost to JB Gough of Davidson (6-4, 6-2). Bryan then defeated Gardner-Webb’s Stefano Puga (6-2, 6-4) and Asheville’s Majed Yousif (6-3, 6-3). Bryan dropped the final match to Andrew Sinai of Asheville, 6-4, 6-3).
Daniel Hammarstedt (Stockholm, Sweden/Ava Gymnasium) fell to Mustapha Belcora of Troy (6-1, 6-2) to move to the consolation bracket. Hammarstedt then knocked off Josh Cook of Charlotte (6-3, 6-4) to set up a Spartans showdown with teammate Ian Melnik (Lawrenceville, Ga./Collins Hill). Hammarstedt fell in a competitive match with his teammate, 6-2, 3-6, 10-7. Hammarstedt wrapped up his weekend, defeating Josh Aubrey of Charlotte, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7.
Melnik fell to Lucas Cerbelli of Wofford (6-4, 6-4) to start in the B1 consolation bracket. Melnik then defeated Appalachian State’s Campbell Stone (6-4, 7-5), before defeating his teammate, Hammarstedt (6-2, 3-6, 10-7). Melnik fell to Julian Chousa of Wofford (3-6, 6-2, 6-1) in his final match of the weekend.
Logan Walker (Stuart, Fla./Morningside Academy) fell to Wofford’s Jack Thomas (6-2, 6-4) before defeating Alex Pavkovich of Appalachian State (6-2, 6-4). Walker finished his weekend against Jacob Wall of Gardner-Webb, withdrawing from the final match.
Three doubles team’s were in action over the weekend, with the pair of Thompson and Vidgren earning the A1 Doubles title. Thompson and Vidgren defeated Poric and Chousa of Wofford, 6-2. The pair then defeated Robert Dudley and Arturo Pinazo, 7-5 before defeating Appalachian State’s pair of Scott Webster and Maddocks, 6-1.
Walker and Bryan paired to earn a berth into the consolation final. The pair fell to Belcora of Troy and Edward Colclough of Asheville, 6-2. The pair then defeated Markel Aramberri and Heorhii Kyzymenko of Bluefield, 6-2 before falling to Asheville’s Massie and Yousif 6-3.
Hammarstedt paired with Melnik, going 1-2 on the weekend. The pair fell to Ruy Teixeira and Aditya Gokhale of Winthrop, 6-2 to start the weekend, before knocking off Pavkovich and Alex Brea of Appalachian State, 6-4. The pair fell to Andre Baldo, and Filip Mansson (6-3) to end the weekend.
Men’s tennis returns to action in the springas they host Troy on January 22nd at 11:00 a.m.
