Men's Tennis Competes at ITA Regionals
CARY, N.C. – UNCG men’s tennis competed at the ITA Regionals in Cary, N.C. over the weekend. The Duke University Blue Devils hosted the tournament. Five Spartans saw action in singles and a trio of doubles teams competed in the Regionals.
Ian Melnik (Lawrenceville, Ga./Collins Hill) suffered two losses in his two matches over the weekend. He first competed against Lucas Cerbelli of Wofford where he dropped the match 6-4, 6-2. Melnik dropped his next match to Shamel Chaudry of NC Central, 6-3, 6-1.
Connor Thompson (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents) earned the first Spartan victory of the weekend, defeating Wofford’s Kyle Barr, 6-0, 6-0. Thompson dropped his next match with Duke’s Nicholas Alvarez, 6-4, 6-2.
Will Albright (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) dropped two tough singles matches over the weekend. After falling to Sebastian Schneider of Coastal Carolina, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, Albright dropped another three set match to Jack Maddocks of Appalachian State, 5-7, 7-6 (3), 6-1).
Marcus Vidgren (Stockholm, Sweden/Stockholm Idrotts Gymnasium) had the most success for the Spartans this weekend. After falling to Maximillian Scholl of Gardner Webb, 6-4, 7-5, Vidgren earned back-to-back wins in the consolation bracket. First, Vidgren knocked off Patrick Longest of Wofford, 6-1, 6-0. The freshman then defeated East Carolina’s Ronny Georgi, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2. Vidgren then pulled out of his matchup with Vlad Anghel of East Carolina to end his weekend at 2-1 in matches played.
Jack Burkill (London, Great Britain/Millfield School) split his two matches in the tournament. Burkill defeated Jose Ortega of Coastal Carolina, 6-4, 6-1 before falling to Felipe Ossess-Koning of Elon, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
In doubles play, Albright and Burkill teamed up to defeatn Sean Burnette and Chris Mikrovas of NC State, 6-1, 6-4. The pair dropped its next match to North Carolina’s duo of Chad Hoskins and Arturo Schmidt, 7-6 (4), 6-3.
Thompson and Vidgren dropped their match to Alvarez and Nick Stachowiak of Duke, 6-4, 6-4. Warren Bryan (Greensboro, N.C./Longwood) and Logan Walker (Stuart, Fla./Morningside Academy) dropped their lone match of the weekend to Robert Kelly and Josh Peck of North Carolina, 6-1, 6-1.
