GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team returns to action this weekend at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate hosted by North Carolina at the Finley Golf Course. The two-day, 54-hole event begins Saturday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on the par-72, 7,349-yard course. The Spartans’ lineup will begin from holes No. 8-11. Live scoring will be available via www.golfstatresults.com.
The field at the 2017 Tar Heel Intercollegiate includes the Spartans, North Carolina, Maryland, Gardner-Webb, UNCW, Campbell, Boston College, VCU, Virginia Tech, Coastal Carolina, Jacksonville and Furman.
Last year, the Spartans finished third overall in the weather-shortened Tar Heel Intercollegiate. UNCG posted a 3-under par 573 score with rounds of 293 and 280. Former Spartan Jake McGlone won the individual title last season with a 6-under par 138. The Spartans enter this weekend ranked third in the Southern Conference with a 295.50 stroke average as a team through the first six rounds of the year.
Sophomore Jonathan Brightwell (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) holds down the top spot in the lineup this weekend. Brightwell ranks second on the team and 10th in the SoCon with a 73.67 stroke average. He is coming off a 28th place finish at the Wolfpack Fall Intercollegiate. He placed 26th overall at the Tar Heel last year with a 1-over par 145.
Freshman Nick Lyerly (Salisbury, N.C./East Rowan) is second in the lineup this weekend. Lyerly leads the team through the first two tournaments and ranks fifth in the SoCon with a 73.00 stroke average. He posted a 36th place finish at the Wolfpack Fall Intercollegiate last time out.
Junior Bryce Hendrix (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) finished 23rd overall at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate last season and an even-par 144 score. This year, he ranks third on the team and 12th in the SoCon with a 73.82 stroke average. He is coming off a 40th place finish at the Wolfpack Fall Intercollegiate.
Senior Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Southern Pines) is fourth in the lineup this week with a 75.67 stroke average through six rounds. He posted a 30th place finish last year at this event with a 2-over par 146. Senior Joseph Cansler (Clemmons, N.C./Surry CC) returns to the lineup for the first time this year. Cansler played in the lineup all year last season, including a 37th place finish at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate with a 3-over oar 147.
The Spartans will play four individuals at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate this weekend. Sophomores Ben Buben (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day) and Michael Wicker (Rougemount, N.C./North Durham) along with freshmen Justin Emmons (Climax, N.C./Providence Grove) and Regan Erhardt (Kernersville, N.C./Bishop McGuiness) will play in the event, beginning Saturday on holes No. 16-18.
