GREENSBORO, N.C. – Seventeen-year UNCG men's golf head coach Terrance Stewart has announced a challenging national schedule for the 2017-18 season, highlighted by hosting two events this season with one at Grandover Resort and one in Palm City, Fla. The Spartans are coming off of three straight runner-up finishes in the Southern Conference Championships, including placing three individuals in the top five of the event with all three golfers returning this season.
“Our schedule will prepare the team once again to compete for a Southern Conference Championship and give us the experience to make a run in the NCAA Tournament,” Stewart said.
The Spartans open the year at the Rod Myers Invitational hosted by Duke at the Duke Golf Club Sept. 16-17. UNCG then travels to the Wolfpack Fall Intercollegiate Oct. 2-3 at the Lonnie Poole GC. Last year, Bryce Hendrix (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) finished 10th overall with a 1-under par 221.
UNCG continues its instate run Oct. 7-8 when it travels to the Finely Golf Course for the annual Tar Heel Intercollegiate. The Spartans placed third overall as a team last season in the rain-shortened event. UNCG makes its seventh-straight appearance in the Auto Trader Collegiate Oct. 16-17 in Duluth, Ga., hosted by Georgia State.
The Spartans wrap up the fall season hosting the 13th-annual UNCG Grandover Collegiate Oct. 28-29. This marks the sixth straight year UNCG has hosted the tournament at the Grandover Resort. Joining the Spartans in the field includes Loyola, North Carolina, Kansas State, Northwestern, VCU, Duke, NC State, Virginia Tech and Georgia State.
The Spartans open the spring portion of the schedule by hosting their first-ever event in the Sunshine state when they welcome in nine teams in Palm City, Fla., for the Martin Downs Collegiate Feb. 11-13. The three-day, 54-hole event will be held at the Martin Downs Golf Club and features Seton Hall, James Madison, Western Carolina, Elon, Boston College, Notre Dame, George Mason, Mercer and West Virginia.
UNCG returns to the Puerto Rico Classic hosted by Purdue at the Rio Mar Golf Course Feb. 18-20. The Spartans make their fourth-straight appearance at the Tiger Invitational March 4-6 hosted by Auburn at the Grand National course. UNCG also returns to the Linger Longer Invitational hosted by Mercer at Reynolds Plantation (March 18-20). Hendrix posted an 8-under par 208 score to finish fifth overall and earn SoCon Golfer of the Week honors last season. The Spartans close out the regular season April 7-8 at the Irish Creek Collegiate hosted by Charlotte in Kannapolis.
The 2018 Southern Conference Championships will again be held in Pinehurst this season with the three-day event running April 22-24 on the Pinehurst #9 course. This will be the fifth straight year the event has been held at Pinehurst #9. The Spartans have finished in the top three the last four seasons of the event, including three straight second place finishes. Last season, Jonathan Brightwell (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) finished tied for first overall on his way to Freshman of the Year honors. Senior Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Pinecrest) and Hendrix both tied for fifth overall in the standings with a 5-over par 221.
The 2018 NCAA Regionals will be played May 14-16 at six different sites across the country. Sites include the Lonnie Pool Golf Course (N.C. State), Traditions Club (Texas A&M), Scarlet Course/OSU Golf Course (Ohio State), Reunion Resort (UCF), Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club (Oklahoma) and The Reserve at Spanos Park (Pacific).
