KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – UNC Greensboro men’s golf (280-277-277) for the third time this year has taken home a tournament victory, as the Spartans on Sunday completed the 2019 Irish Creek Intercollegiate at 834 18-under. With a seven-under in Sunday’s third round, UNCG tallied its second-lowest 54-hole score in school history (834) and the 18-under is tied for the third-lowest score against par.
This is also the second time in program history the Spartans have won three tournaments in one season, joining the 1995-96 squad.
Additionally, senior Bryce Hendrix (66-65-62) finished in first place at the tournament at 20-under. His 62 on Sunday was not only an 18-hole program record, his 54-hole score of 193 shattered the previous school record of 203 set by Carter Jenkins at the 2013 Wolfpack Intercollegiate and his 20-under also easily broke the school record for a score against par.
During the third round, Hendrix recorded a nine-under 62 with nine birdies and no holes over par. On the back-nine, the Greenville, N.C., native carded a seven-under 29 highlighted by six-straight birdies.
For the tournament, Hendrix tallied 21 birdies and just one bogey.
Sophomore Nick Lyerly (71-71-71) finished tied for 22nd place as he was even-par throughout all three rounds the at the par 71 course. On Sunday, Lyerly recorded four birdies and four bogeys.
Junior Grant Powell (72-72-71) ended the tournament tied for 34th place after he was also even-par 71 on Sunday.
Sophomore Zack Swanson (75-69-73) completed the weekend tied for 45th place after he carded a two-over 73 over the final 18 holes.
Junior Jonathan Brightwell (71-73-75) rounded out team play for the Spartans with a four-over 75 in the third round to finish tied for 55th place.
UNCG will now turn its attention to the Southern Conference Championships that will take place April 21-23 at Pinehurst No. 9 in Pinehurst, N.C.
